Cabronita Cantina

No resolution with that guy. But having trouble getting the Cabronita out of my brain. Was thinking about building my own w/ all Fender parts [except the bridge, light weight tuners] in an effort to ultimitely produce the lightest, yet balanced Cab. Or, I might find one complete and do the necessary mods. But it's your CAR Cab w/ red PG and red pearl knobs that keep this dream alive.

I haven't tried the Squier so I can't say for sure but I'm reasonably certain the neck profile is slimmer if I go off the specs on their site. The Fenders have a thick C profile that is yummy but maybe not for everyone. You would also get the vintage reverse tuners, the new hi-mass bridge (nice) and alder body, and 3 color choices. I believe the Squier is a modern C profile with the same bridge and tuners as the CV/VM series and different wood (Agathis maybe?) and black only. I guess it's whatever suits you but I think it would be worth the difference...they are just so solid. A great bass.

I'll scrape some change together for a fender, I love seeing that mans name on my axes!

Well, you folks have convinced me. I just cannot make up my mind whether Fender or Squier. I have watched you tube videos for both and really cannot tell much difference in sound. I guess the fact that the Squier has a modern c shape neck which is a little easier to navigate with short arthritic fingers and has a scoop out of the back making it more comfortable to hold. Do wish the Squier had the red and burst options.

Asatman I just happen to have one if you want to check it out. I swaped the bridge to a threaded style. I was going to refinish it but haven't had the chance to even slow down.

Any chance you can weigh the high mass bridge? If not, is it solid & heavy or cast and less weight than it appears? What color did you have in mind for the refin?

A quick once over this morning. Impressions? Sorry, I'm a bass player, I don't do impressions [insert rim shot] I must say the fit & finish are pretty damn good. The setup was good from the get-go. Only had to slightly tune the E & A strings. The round wounds are zingy as hell though. Got some TI flats on the way which will be bright enough till they break in.

No real world tests yet but the pickup seems punchy and bright but a bit less omph than I'm used to compared to a mid 70's vintage Gretsch Thunderblade. Not sure if it's the pickup placement, volume/ tone pots & cap, strings, or all of the above. Nothing I can't dial in with my GK1001RB. The tone control has a weird [unintentional] indent for some reason. All in all a nice bit of kit for the investment.

She weighs in at 8lbs 13oz. Future mods include Gotoh Res-o-lites, 2 saddle string thru bridge [chrome plated solid brass, made by my dad] plus string ferrules, and PG [idea stolen directly from God's Fav BP]. New pots & cap are probably in order as well. The goal is to come in as close to 8lbs as possible.

Updates when the mods are complete.

She's a looker! Yeah the pickup is a bit more "mid-y" than the Thunderblade but a good grindy rock pickup. Thats the mod I want on my black one, a TV Jones Thunderblade. It IS a good bang for the buck huh? Me likey mine, glad you scored it:hyper:

Is there the typical cnc hole under the pickguard, or is it clean under there?

Really like the ones posted here that have a matching pickguard, was simply curious if even necessary.
I owned a Fender version. Sold the body and kept the neck. I may be wrong, but I think one of them has the CNC hole and one doesn't. Or maybe they both do. I'm at work right now with no tools otherwise I'd take a look right now. If there's no CNC hole I'll probably leave the pg off.
