Cabronita Cantina

this club needs a little bump. I just picked up a cabby off eBay and she arrived yesterday. Here is a pic of her with her older sisters. That's a 74 P in the back and a 96 (I think) mim P that I got from StreetScenes, a fellow TBer.

Question for Gods Favorite Bassist, I noticed earlier you were interested in giving out and maintaining a member list, if you still are, I'd take a number and I'd love #11. Also, did you ever put the TV Jones in?

Has anyone added a second pickup yet?

Congrats on the score! They can be had a good prices and given the great hardware and neck and overall construction quality I think they are one of the BEST Fender buys out there. Sort of a sleeper bass if you will. I unfortunately (or fortunately, in this case) got financially side-tracked on the Thunderblade project with a couple of good finds DSC03508.JPG DSC03415.JPG but am back on the mod bus as soon as Christmas is over and will keep you posted.

I still would be happy to do numbers but am unsure whether to do it here or start an official thread for a Cabronita Club. Thoughts anyone??

I played my new cabronita at church this morning. I read somewhere, someone saying that these wouldn't work well in a praise and worship setting. Well, it worked great for me! We play a little more "dirty" maybe than some worship bands as our congregation is very young. I loved the way it cut through!
I'm telling you...they are great basses for rock/aggressive playing but I just think they don't cosmetically appeal to as many as say a P Bass, but I have as many slab bodies as I do contoured P-Basses and I think they are sexy.
I just noticed where you live...Did you get it from Dave? I've done business with him for probably 30 years. Ever since he had the tiny store on the other end of town. Used to paint for him too...great guy that Dave.
Glad you are digging the Cabby!

I didn't get this one from Dave, but I did get my '74 P from him, among many others. Dave is the best in the business.

Man, I wish this club was more active. Every time I pick this bass up, I smile. I really am impressed by the surprisingly wide range of sounds I can get out it with just the one pickup and tone control and varying my attack and where I play. It seems strange to say, but I feel like it can even approximate a Ric 4003 better than any bass I've played. Everytime I play it, I end up playing the intro to Roundabout and surprise myself.

Well, the OP said home-brews were welcome so even though I've plastered these pics all over TB hope y'all don't mind a few more.

These are my own take on the Carbronita theme. Btw, I had no idea the Fender Carbronita even existed when I had these bouncing around in my head.

I know...I can't put mine down either. I was playing that new AV70's hot rod jazz that I got from Dave jacked into a Bass ace with an mp3 player the other day thinking it was a fun bass and still finished the night plugged into a Cabby. They are just that good.

i finally got to try the squier one at gc two weeks ago and it was kind of a typical tryout, the neck profile was sweet and the bass was actually pretty darn light, however the action was horrible awful and i didn't think gc would appreciate me getting my tool kit out of my pickup so i could set up the darn thing

I haven't tried the Squier or seen one even. Is the neck a thick C profile? Too bad about the poop setup.

kind of a typical pasadena gc experience for me, it seemed to be a little deeper than my L2000 with the 1.625 nut, while it seemed to be a little rounder profile than my old highway one p with the 1.625 nut, i could see me picking one up for a backup eventually

Anyone know what the Cabronita High Mass bridge weighs? Plan on replacing it with a custom bridge and would like to find out how much it would affect the overall weight of the bass.
Thanks in advance!

Btw, I blame each and everyone of y'all for my Cabronita craving. ;-)
