Cabronita Cantina

That's hilarious. I've been seriously lusting after these basses for a while now, but I think that in a bright orange or purple color these things would look fantastic

+1
I want an Orange one, and a Purple one.

...
The tone is a bit of a departure from a P bass. More aggressive with more high mids and a little less low mid punch. Not far off from a good Ric bridge pickup. I'd say it lands between Precision and Ric territory.
...

That's why I'd love to hear one with the TV Jones Thundermag, which is described as "Thundertron meets Rickenbacker".

Does anyone have a link where Fender explains what "Cabronita" is supposed to mean? I imagine they actually meant Cabroncita, with a "c".

Also, they have a "Boracho" bass, but again, that word does not exist, unless they meant Borracho.

Thanks for the help, bit expensive though for the proto. Would look so much better in CAR too!

Not to be soul crushing but I have a CAR Cabby and I also have a 51 CV (with a Cabby neck:thumbsup:) and a MIM Dirnt and that guard will fit, but the upper rear pickguard screw hole (a countersunk one too I might add...why countersink a screw hole in the wood body?!?!) hangs out above the bottom bout of a 51 guard. The control plate holes are spaced farther apart too...sigh. I only share this because I wanted to do the same thing as what you've photoshopped and have the parts laying about to do so and have laid them out. You would have to live with the hole or re-fin and you would need to route for the plate. Mods worth doing for sure, but not a kitchen table on a Sunday afternoon with a screw driver and drill operation. Just a heads up before you buy the parts.

Also, is someone giving out numbers? I would love to be in a Cabby club...such a great bass! I wouldn't mind keeping numbers if no one is/wants to. I will post mine up later today (already did in Precision Bass Club thread) after Blue Santa (USPS) brings my new guard from WD...woot woot!

Going to post a string rant for a bit here.
Although these basses are not far removed from the regular Fender Precision genetic strain, they are nevertheless different. Therefore, as a string-changing nutball, I am very into trying different strings on these things.
When I first got this bass, MIM La Cabronita, I played it with rounds that came on it, D'Addario nickel wounds, light gauge. Bright as heck, but sounded great. Took the suggestion to put Chromes on it, and did. Loved it, because I'm a fan of Chromes. But then I got a wild hair and threw some very old GHS Pressurewounds on it, that I had sitting around for about six years or something like that. They sounded good, but seemed tense as all get-out. So, I restrung it with the same Chromes and played it like that for a while. But something didn't seem all that right about it to me, and after a while, I put the Pressurewounds back on it and adjusted it and dialed it way, way down and played it until they broke in.
Now, I switch strings around all the time in order to try different things for different sounds. I've had tapes on my Warwick and all sorts of stuff. But I have to say, GHS Pressurewounds sound really, really good on these basses.
So the point of this post is that I am wondering, since these basses are so new (compared to the rest of the Precision line), what other people have been doing to/with theirs in this sort of regard.
While the stock issue 7250M rounds sound good, I also like the Pressurewounds and pretty much use them exclusively on all my basses, with the ML7200 (102) Being the string of choice. The light set (98) is a bit too noodle-y for me anymore, but used to use those. Pressurewounds are a so much more fret friendly alternative to rounds and less finger noise to boot with practically all the brightness of a round...sort of like a broken in round without having to live through doing it;)so, yes...+1

I can't speak as to boracho, but it's my personal opinion (and that of my spanish professor) that they mis-gendered "cabron." I dunno if it was intentional, hoping nobody would notice the joke they were trying to make, or if they just suck at spanish (which would be embarrassing, considering fender is based in AZ.)

Cabron is the masculine. Cabrona is the feminine (as an insult, not referring to an animal). Cabroncita is the diminutive of Cabrona. I don't know if they really messed up that much or if Fender Corp decided to make up a word in order to more easily copyright or trademark it. I wonder if they have their bean counters naming their products now.

And as for Borracho, it's the same word in Italian, spelled Borracio, but pronounced the same as in Spanish. There's a Shakespeare character with that name.

Really loving my Cabronita! What a great bass they are. But even with that being said, I cant keep my mad-scientist mitts off anything and the pearl fairy stopped into the lab today and did this whilst I napped LOL. Sorry for the crap before and afters, the afters don't do the pearl justice I must say. It's like a Jolly Rancher Cherry or, well...Candy Apple.

Here's mine. Can I be honest? I want to love her so much, so why is she on sale in classifieds right now? I'm thinking I need to try flats ASAP, it's just not a warm sounding bass, at least to my taste. Thought about checking out a TV Jones pick up and may just do that if it doesn't sell, either that or a Curtis Novak Bi-Sonic may look good in their... what am I doing wrong people, like I said, I want to love her.

If you like the feel and mechanics, try perhaps some half-rounds or pressure-wounds. If it's still to bright then maybe the flats. It is definitely brighter than my p-basses but not objectionably so (to me) and perhaps the pickup (TV Jones Thunberblade) might do it for you. You can dabble with different caps too. But if you don't like the feel and unplugged it doesn't do it for you...maybe it isn't for you. I know mine with rounds is pretty spanky and stings can mellow it out considerably if it still has the 7250's it came with. They are almost obnoxious at least on a Cabby.

I have a set of flats and a set of half rounds I'm going to try. The strings on it now are not the originals, I think I have boomers on it right now. I like the feel of it, I'm not completely broken up with her just yet. The brightness doesnt bother me, to my ears the bass is all pointy mids and I prefer a warmer, rounder sound with some top end for definition. The reason I'm not more aggressively selling is that I think she could be an interesting recording bass and I'd like to try before I let her go.

You could also try putting in a higher value cap on the tone control to roll off more of the highs. like a .047 instead of the .026 that is in there . It is all reversable if you don't like it and caps are cheap. if you want a lot of highs gone you could try a .1 cap that would take care of the bright and give you more of a dub sound. I think the .047 would help you out.

I actually bought this bass. I really didn't care for the tone. I've never really bonded with any pbass, but the neck is fantastic. I love the chunkiness and the tele style headstock. It's put it on my mij jazz body.

Just got mine in from Sweetwater on Thursday. I love this bass-really fun to play! Setup was perfect out of the box. Neck is chunky, but I'm already used to it. There's nice growl and punch with great note definition. Mine weighs 9 lbs. 6 oz. A bit heavier than I wanted, but manageable for this 55 year old. I'll post Sweetwaters pics, because I couldn't do better.
