Cabronita Cantina

Ok, I am the owner of a SQUIER Cabronita bass. I got it at a very attractive price, and had to have it. Plus, it looks AWESOME!

Then the downward spiral...the feel of the bass is top notch! It really has that MIA, kinda robust, quality feel to it. I love the action, it sits pretty low, no buzzes. It does have the typical 6th fret "dead spot" that my Squier Matt Freeman P bass has, and a MIM jazz bass had, so I'm used to it; it's nothing too serious. Anyways, great feeling bass overall. But then I plug it in. The sound is big but only on the higher strings, G and D, mellower (not in a good way) on the A string, and pretty bland on the low E string. After adjusting the pickup I got a louder E string, but nothing good. A only added "mud" to it, and the other strings are not tamer, even with the pickup almost all the way in on the treble side.

On to the pots. I got a bad tone knob, in the way that if I push it on it's side (not turning it) it gets louder, and more zingy. But I don't want to fiddle with that all of it's life. The jack is your average squier quality, and the volume does it's job. Oh, and for the record, the output and volume I get from the bass is significantly lower than my P bass. For comparison sake I installed a Curtis Noval 60's spec on my p bass/250k pots/.047 cap.

The sound is DARK. Not at all how most of you guys describe it to be, halfway from a p bass and a ric. This sounds NOTHING like that! My P bass is brighter even with flats!

**I do change pots, cap and jack to the typical CTS/orange drop/switchkraft config on all my passive basses I've own**

I really wanted to like this bass. And even though I put it in the classifieds, I decided to upgrade electronics and give it a chance, because I love the feel of it, but hate the sound right now.

I bought myself a TV Jones ThunderBlade pickups. Those things are pricey! It's still on it's way though. With my TV Jones order I included a .022 Orange Drop cap that someone at TV Jones recommended.

I ordered 2 250k CTS pots, some vintage cloth wire, a switchkraft jack and an elektro socket.

Oh, and new strings, because the stock fender rounds are crap. Ordered some D'addario EXP XL rounds. I already use flats on my p bass.

So...any SQUIER Cab owners out there. I have a couple of questions.

1. What value of capacitor does it have STOCK? I have NO idea.
2. Will the elektro socket fit the input jack hole?
3. Has anyone installed 500k pots on their cabronita bass?

FUTURE:
If I like the sound of the upgraded electronics I'll keep it, strip the paint and paint it sonic blue, and add a Tortoise shell pickguard, add vintage style tuners and a custom decal I had made.

If I don't like it, I'll sell the TV Jones pickup here, and sell the bass.

I REALLY want to like it.

I hope it lines out for you. I am really happy with my 2 and have none of the gremlins you are experiencing. I will be eager to hear how the pickup works for you as I am torn between a Thunderblade or Thundermag mod for one of mine. They are great basses, maybe yours just needs a little love. Good luck

Yeah, I did a pretty crappy cut out on the pickguard, but I don't care. I like what this added visually and also that it forces me to not play directly over the pickup which when you dig in can make an unpleasant "pop"

I love these basses!
That cover is a cool idea! I thought about the 51 guard/control plate mod until I laid one of my 51 guards on it and saw the big countersunk pick guard screw hole in the rear/top position is exposed. If I were to do one like that I think I would by a Squire one and then strip it and fill the holes and respray some cool custom color. Then route for the control plate as the knobs aren't spaced the same as the 51 plate either. I might have to make it a summer project as I haven't sprayed anything in a while and I'm getting all Jones-y for lacquer smell.

And yes...they DO make a pop when you dig in because those pole pieces stick up so high and I just slap the crap outta them if I get real heavy handed...It's a love/hate relationship LOL.

Great looking cab you got there ScarfFace! Liking the sunburst.

Anyway, yeah I really hope I can end up liking it, because the feel is top notch!

Does anybody know the value of electronics in the Squier cab? Like the value of the pots (even though I suspect they are 250k alphas) and most importantly the value of the capacitor please?

I can not tell you...mine are both MIM, but...do the "ask the seller a question" on these and I'm sure you will find out, here:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-Squi...459?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item58bcac2973

Those of you with replaced pickguards...from where are you sourcing them? I'm looking for a black guard and backplate; Fender currently won't sell them.

+1. I've been looking for a pickguard for my Fender Cabronita without much luck (mine has the white pickguard and I prefer black). I've been considering Pickguardian.

Ugh...giving away secrets...oh what the heck. WD has them, look for the 6 string model for the materials offered and pricing and the bass model is the same price and materials available. They just don't have the bass models on the site listing. My tort and my pearl ones were right around 38 bones if I recall. You will need to call to order. They do not have backplates but will make one. You're welcome. LOL
