Calling all ACG filter preamp users!

I went with the "new way" wiring since my bass is a mahogany core with a koa top - I wanted that Wal bite and it came out perfectly. I found that when I paired other pickups to the ACG, I didn't get as much high end as I would have wanted but now I don't have that issue.

Bass with old pickups, but the ACG preamp:

I would like to try the EQ01 / Rautia Multi coil option in a bass but what he says of his pickup is "Great pickup for producing a "middish nasal" sound.".. Doesn't sound that great to me. I also wonder about the summing of each of the coils in these multi coils (Bassculture too). It seems that with the proven ones like the Wal and ACG MC series sum the coils actively rather than just wiring all the coils in series etc. Does your setup sound full range ?

I would say yes, it sounds full range. The beauty of this system is that you have two LPF's, so the low end is there, then with the HPF Treble you add back in the high end. If you like the tone of Wal's, then the Rautia pickups are perfect for that application. I really love the sound of this option when combined with the ACG preamp - "2: Each pair of coils per string in series, and then all the pairs in parallel. "New way"."

Any soundclips?

I have one of these in a PJ setup and love it. The pickups are custom wound split coils for each pickup. So no noise. Has anybody installed the EQ01 into a dual single coil bass (ie - jazz) ? I have an Ibanez SR1205 I am thinking about improving with one of these. I just wonder how a filter based preamp would affect the humcancelling side of things. Since you are eqing each pickup differently I wonder if the humcancelling side of things doesn't work quite the same. Or am I overthinking it ?

You’re overthinking it. Humcancelling pickups do their thing before the preamp even becomes involved. By the time the preamp gets the signal, the hum has already been cancelled!

The SR1205 has 2 single coil pickups (Nordy Big Singles). So no. The preamp does not receive a hum cancelled signal. With a preamp like the EQ01 it has a buffer for each of the 2 pickups. Then mixes them together like on a mixing console. I was just wondering how the filters would effect the phase cancellation that occurs in order to make 2 single coils hum cancel. Because the 60 cycle hum is much lower that you are going to be adjusting the filter I suspect it has very little. I might just get some custom wound split coils for the SR1205 and add an EQ01..

With a pair of RWRP single coils, the signal isn’t phase cancelled, only the hum. So the preamp will still get....

Oh okay, I see where you’re coming from now.

The preamp is getting two distinct signals, one from each pickup, and each of those signals still includes some hum, because the two signals haven’t been combined yet. The hum is at 50hz or 60hz (depending on where in the world you are), so if one pickup’s filter is set below 60hz and the other above 60hz, then the hum-cancelling properties of the pair will be defeated, and some hum will come out the other end of the preamp.

Do the LPFs reach down below 60hz?

I guess it comes down to if there is any harmonics from the hum that wouldn't get cancelled. I doubt there is much in it. It was just a crazy thought I had.

I have a bass with a similarly-buffered Audere pre and pickups wired to hum-cancel each other in split mode. Even though the pickups are electronically isolated, the single coil noise from each is still out of phase with the other as audio, and therefore all the noise (not just the base 60hz) present still cancels.

With filters, single coil noise should cancel within any band of overlap between the pickups' settings unless there's something else affecting phase.

I’m not interested in getting that Wal sound, preferring a more traditional tone, but am interested in the way these filters can be used to revoice a pickup. Wonder how the EQ01 would work with a pair of Nordstrand Zen Blades?

I have the EQ01 in a Schecter 80's PJ bass. A friend has wound some custom split coils for each pickup and they sound great with the filters open but I love the way you can give each pickup its own sonic space and then blend them. I think the EQ01 would work nicely with the ZEN's. I would like to try that combo in my SR1205.

Is the EQ01 only available from AC Guitars in Scotland or from the East website in the UK?

No, it’s also available from John East - Invalid Link Removed

Oops - as you added to your post yourself.....

Anyway, I ordered one from East online, and it arrived safe and sound, no worries...

Hi

For some weird reason my EQ-001/5 seems to be really sucking the juice out of the battery.

Neither 18 or 9 volts configuration seems to matter.

I've tried a few different batteries.

9V rechargeable ( EBL 6F22 ) wont even activate the preamp even when fully charged to 8.4V.

Alkalines drain down to low voltage ( > 5Vdc )in a few days. ( I don't leave it plugged in ) and it starts to sound
absolutely horrible with distorted wolf-note like distortion following the normal notes

I'm going to get some new alkalines today and measure the voltage when I install one and after it drains to get an idea of how long it seems to take.

I've tried different brands of 9V, even the Ultimate Lithium ones.

Any troubleshooting ideas?

TIA

I'm no expert on the inner workings of the preamp, but my first guess would be a short or bad connection somewhere in the battery connector wiring or jack, either causing the battery to drain all the time (even when the bass isn't plugged in), or preventing the output from the battery from getting to the preamp.

It’s a battery hog. Mine was going through a 9v in a month, maybe less. When I asked John East about it he said “there’s a lot of processing going on”.
The sound is worth it.
I now run my bass with an external power supply. DIY phantom power! Works and sounds great.
