Calling all ACG filter preamp users!

This is getting sort of funny.

What a clusterfudge!

Had a bad/intermittent ground to jack. Fixed that.

Half of the dual battery box I installed was defective.
Battery in one side wasn't consistently making proper contact.
Bypassed that side and switched to 9V operation which seems to have fixed that issue, for now.

All the batteries I'd been using, while either new or freshly charged showed low voltage when I measured them.
One was 4.5V... Best rechargeable was 8.4V fresh out of the charger.
I didn't use any bargain budget batteries in any of this...

Got a new coppertop, it measured 9.64V out of the package, so we'll see how long that lasts...

The cherry on the sundae is that it seems I have blown out my ancient BD770s which is probably the cause of the distortion.
I need to investigate further, but the wolftones/distorto trails aren't audible when I play thru speakers.
It's possible that I might be overdriving something in my interface's headphone circuit, though...

More investigation today...

Bringing this thread back from the dead for anyone else that may have picked up one of the recently re-offered EQ-01 pres. I put mine in a PJ build with some of the old Seymour Duncan EQ switch active pickups and have been loving it, but am curious about experimenting with different pickups (I have been flirting with trying it in my Rickenbacker 4003, though I would need to do some cavity routing to fit it in that relatively shallow route which has prevented me so far).
The Duncans are relatively bright and thin pickups naturally, good in the sense that they seem to give the preamp a wide palette to shape but also a bit sterile on their own and I feel like the built-in EQ switches of the Duncan’s are kinda wasted when paired with the preamp.
What other PJ pickups have ACG users paired with their pres? I have an older standard EMG active PJ set I may try soon.

Old post, but most rechargeable 9V batteries don’t actually have 9V capacity. There are only a few that do, and they do this by putting an extra 8th 1.2V battery cel in the casing (standard is 7 cels, which in a rechargeable usually only gives you 8.4V max- some of the rechargeables in a 9V shell only give 7.2V max!). The 8 cel rechargeables are slightly larger than a standard 9V and won’t fit in a lot of instrument battery compartments, plus they tend to not last very long compared to an alkaline non-rechargeable.

I recently picked up a Fishman Universal rechargeable supply to work with my few active basses and so-far, so-good (expensive solution though). I hate non-rechargeable batteries, as convenient as they may be in these utilities!

I found that out after I bought...

No more rechargeables for me in basses.

Coppertops are fine, last long time now the wiring is sorted.

Some dumbass ( me ) wired the - battery lead to the sleeve instead of the ring and I was going through batteries.

Fishman thing sounds cool, but I only have one, soon to be two basses to feed.

It's still in this with a pair of V1 Q-Tuners.

This one's my keeper.

Preamp's a bit fiddly if I don't restrain myself, but that's because there are so many great sounds in it.

Gonna try Rautia/Lusithand for the next one.

Not PJs, and not an EQ-01, but as I probably already mentioned years ago in this thread: I installed an ACG EQ-02 in my Modulus Quantum-6 SPX bass that has EMG J pickups...and, in addition to all the really cool tone sculpting you can do with the ACG filters, one of the most elucidating and endearing results was that with all the filters completely open -- what one could almost consider the "neutral" or "flat" [sic] setting -- the bass still sounded better than it ever had with the previous electronics (I had gone through both the stock harness and an EMG BTC before getting the ACG). So based on that experience I would think an EQ-01 with EMG PJ pickups would be an excellent combination.

I have seen a few people mention different EMGs pairing well, so I’ll have to give it a go!

Thread bump

So I got an EQ01 as a throw in with a bass purchase. Unfortunately, the components aren’t labeled and no installation instructions were included. Does anyone here have info that could help me determine which pots/boards do what and how to hook everything up. I will them share this info with my tech.

That is the case with all EQ-01s as far as I know- 4 concentric pots with circuit board connected and possibly a 5th control for a passive tone. If you have a different config then yours may be a different pre (like the EQ-02 with a single low-pass filter for example). You should have one larger board attached to the Volume/Blend (the “main board” pictured in the manual), 2 identical medium-sized boards (the two low-pass filter boards, one for the neck pickup and one for the bridge pickup), then a pot with a very small board that is the high-pass filter board. You may also have a 5th control (dual pot but only a single shaft) that is a passive tone control.

2nd question for US based users of the preamp - what kind of stacked knobs did you get for the pot shafts?

Anything advertised to work for EMG/Bartolini/etc pres should also work I believe- just double-check the sizing specs, and there are also lots of other options on Amazon
