Im still a noob when it comes to basses but when I use my pick as for example if i pluck my E string open it makes a weird slight buzzing sound that changes in sound if i let it ring out all the way. With a finger you can hear it too but only if you play hard. Any idea's on the problem? It also buzzes when playing like punk rock with a pick. Do i need to raise my strings up so i can play more aggressively? Ive taken it to 2 techs but was not given the greatest of service and nether fixed the problem. Thanks

Calling all pick users and or Peavey T-40 owners for some buzz help!

If your trying to get a more aggressive pick tone you may be striking hard enough to get too much string movement. The strings vibrate in a circular motion and at the bottom may be hitting the higher frets. You can raise the action if you wish to continue playing the way you are, or you can move your strokes closer to the bridge. This will accentuate the upper mids and highs making a more aggressive tone, while minimizing string movement.
Or you may need more relief in your neck. String height and neck relief work together to determine the action of your bass; getting one right won't solve the problem if the other is off.
I think it's a very good idea to learn to do set-ups on your own instruments. It's important to know what you're doing because you can damage or even ruin an instrument if you crank on the truss rod too hard, but setting up a bass is not rocket science, and you are the best person to do it because nobody knows better than you what you want. The book How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great by Dan Erlewine is a good guide. So is his Guitar Repair Guide.
Finally, a T-40 specific note: according to the T-40 owner's manual, the bridge saddle adjustments are used to set the radius of the strings, but it says to use the neck tilt feature to actually set string height. If you don't have one, you can download the owner's manual from Peavey's web site.
