im thinking of buying flat strings. whats the difference between a nice set of flat strings and a old rough set of round ones?

Calluses-The pain and other things that come with.

Playing 43 years this past Christmas little to no calluses on the old pads I play both light and agressive finger style both flat and round wound strings and I pick up the bass everyday.
I actually witnessed that one night. Hubby and I had gone to a Christmas party at a studio down in Austin. They had different bands playing in different rooms, and I was enjoying a really nice funk group. The bassist was doing a lot of slap-n-pop. Maybe it was the champaigne or whatever, but he got real carried away. Played for a long time...slap, pop, pluck...and HIS FINGERS BLED!!! Big ol' blood blisters...and then one of them popped. The blood sprayed the white bass, his white shirt, and everyone sitting in front of him. Myself included.
Eww. Not lyrical at all.

Nope, have yet to get a blister/callus from playing. I use Roto Swing 66s and play quite aggressively, and instead of calluses, I sort of just wear the skin off, and I think I've somewhat killed the nerve endings, as I seem to have lost some touch sensitivity in my right pointer finger (main plucking finger). I mean, I guess there some dead skin build up, but not like where it changes to that funky yellow callus color.
Never had blisters in around 13 years of playing - not that I can remember and there have been some long rehearsals, etc in amongst that!
My index and middle fingers on my plucking hand are slightly calloused in that there is a small part that is hard - but not super calloused.
on my fretting hand it is similar but not as bad. I play on average around 90mins/day at least.

I have calluses/blisters on my right index and middle finger (usually only when playing my G&L for a while or anything with a shuffle type of pattern for any length of time(roughest strings thus far), but not my fretting hand.
I have way more callusses on my hands due to the whole lifting thing (my left hand especially is a problem until I "shave" them down, if I don't, I sometimes find it hard to grip the neck)...

It you are playing alot you will have calluses. If you stop then play alot, it is like having a cheeze grader on your fingertips and thumb and wherever you slap that puppy. We assume roundwound strings are a little corse, but they can have microscopic burrs that tear skin. I have gotten metal slivers from new, top brand roundwounds.
My trick is if your fingertips are raw and you have a gig is to apply a very thin coating of good quality super glue on where you pluck strings the most. Whatever you do, BE CAREFUL and DO NO GLUE YOUR FINGERS TOGETHER

! Instant callus!!I have not blistered before, but today, picked up a friends guitar and was strumming some blues stuff with my thumb, it was a lot of fun so I lost track of time. Got home tonight and noticed a nice blister on the front corner of my thumb. Silly little guitar strings, lol!
