A friend of mine wanted to show me his new Mogami(?) cable he just bought.

I bought a new cable last week, a Lava Retro 20' coiled, played a gig with it and I swear there was a noticeable quality increase in my sound. I've always shrugged off the claims that cables can make a significant difference in live sound (other than not having one, then you DO have some sound degradation! LOL!), but little things became very noticeable.
I am running an MIA P through an GK MB800 and an Epifani UL2-410. I use a custom made heavy-gauge Speakon cable between 'em, but I've been using a $10 10' cable for about 15 years. Been noticing for some time now that when I dig-in (I naturally play hard with fingers) the tone would start to grind when I reach a certain threshold and trust me, it isn't a "pleasant" grind. I also like to do a quick double stop accent up around fret 12 that I was never able to hear live and was always lost.
Well, to sum it up, I was blown away that the tone never once crapped out with the new cable and the little accent was full and could be heard, and not just by me but my drummer also heard it! So, opinions, am I wishful thinking?
Pick up some RTA software, many free one available.
Loop the cable from input to output on your pc interface and measure it.

Really? According to your theory, materials make absolutely no difference as long as capacitance is ok. Capacitance is the ability to store an electrical charge. Cables do not store electricity, they simply transmit electrical signals. Since all metals have differing properties of conductivity, it makes sense that cables made with better quality metals will conduct electricity better than those of inferior quality and your bass should sound better.
When you learn how they actually work, you discover that they can be measured. The cables that had the "blanket effect" had higher capacitance, and may have degraded the way Tbird described.

The cut-off between what can or cannot be measured is a fundamental core of the science of measurement. Therefore, what cannot be measured must be viewed as the future of science, physics, and engineering. Maybe there are obstacles that cannot be overcome, but if the goal of research is to learn more, then that which cannot be measured should be the prime goal of science rather than something relegated to science fiction.
If you are stagnant, then fine, let the unobtainable remain unobtainable. My sense is that science, physics, and engineering is the antithesis of being stagnant. At the same time, the goal may be unattainable. But that should not deter the true scientist, physicist, or engineer.
Large issue there in definitions. I was referring to that which cannot be measured - the realm of religion and metaphysics. You are referring to that which we cannot yet measure - too often the realm of pseudo-science. Of course, the devil can be in avoiding confusing the two.![]()

The issue is not whether a cable conducts electricity better, it's whether any difference it makes is audible. Also, a cable is not something that just allows electrons to flow. It is a transmission line. Not unlike a waveguide used in radar, or an antenna used for an RF signal. Transmission lines have to be "tuned" properly for max efficiency.
A few broken strands does not affect it's ability to conduct, but it can affect it's ability to transmit.
So, in the end, one instrument cable design can easily be better than another.

Its nonsense, but there defiantly is a difference when it comes to quality. For example, gold conducts better than silver and cheap connectors dont last as long as good connectors, but I cant hear a difference - and Im willing to bet you wouldnt pass a blind test either.
