Can a new/different bass re-ignite the "passion?"

Wow nice.. thought about that too. Maybe buy a cheap heavy metal guitar to just shred on to Pantera..Can't duplicate Dime bag Darrell but can have fun trying lol
Dude, that's what I'm doing... having fun! I learned Aqualung too. It's sloppy as all getout, but the distortion sounds soooo good, and feels soooo righteous!
Get out of the house and go see some other local bands.

UPDATE--Played last night with the MTD Beast 4 and my session lasted about 1.5 hrs, felt really good. I played the whole Grease soundtrack lol--fun stuff
Excellent... just gotta change it up every now and then... the 'bouncy' bass line to the main theme (You're The One That I Want?) is a great practice tool... for me, anyways... get's me out of my comfort zone. Carry on, @FishDub!
Yep that line is killer..Takes a lot of practice to nail that song but a very busy groove indeed!
We are all different. A new bass might be just what some players need, especially if the old bass had shortcomings. I will say, however, for me, wanted new basses is usually just GAS.
Got that musical rut thing going down right now too. First time in 4-5 years that I hit a low point where I just ain't into it. Some of it is just lack of time currently (renovation projects on the house, day job, etc), some of it is 2 projects that crashed and burned recently. Some of it is frustration looking for the right fit (band-wise) for me. What it isn't, is the basses. I'm good there. But I completely get the "new" bass jumpstarting the drive and passion. It's been a while, but the last rut I went through was like that. Was just not happy with the basses I had at the time. Got a new (used) one that I love, and later added a different one. Those 2 moves did help rekindle the flame last time.
Cool! Do tell..What basses were you not happy with and what did you end up getting?
Was using a Guild Pilot as my main bass for decades. J pup and pot died and I changed them from the stock EMG PJ set that came with it to the PJ-X set. Hated the J on the PJ-X. Still haven't bought an original set to change it back yet, but will. Had an Ibanez (lower end) 5 string fretless that was plagued with issues from the notorious bridge breaking situation that has been well documented here, to the fretless line markings (actually plastic inserts) popping up and having to be planed down over and over again. Those 2 things just got me into a downward spiral.
With the extended warranty on the Ibanez, I returned it for a full refund and picked up a '98 Fender American Deluxe Jazz (with the Suhr pre and pups)... absolutely badass bass. Really sparked me to get grooving again. About 2 years later, I traded a Tacoma Thunderchief that I lost a passion for in on a brand new Fender American Standard Precision. First P bass I've owned... and the first one that I tried that felt good in my hands. Those 2 basses really got me motivated again. I use the Jazz about 75% of the time, with the P picking up the rest. Pretty soon I'm getting that Pilot back into order and we'll see where it winds up sitting then.
For my 50th birthday (a couple of years ago...) my wife bought me an American Standard Jaguar Bass.
Great bass. Tone for days. Playability is off the scale. Cops that Precision growl in spades. Can't say enough good things about it, and would never part with it. However, it doesn't scream at me to play it.
I have a number of other basses in various configurations, plus the Jaguar, that I'll off the wall and noodle with most nights. All are very playable.
Relatively recently I found a used (barely) 2000 MiM Precision on Craigslist. I can't get enough of it.
Makes all the right noises; plays superbly; looks fantastic (with new knobs and pickguard); and is light as a feather.
It gets more strap/lap time than any other bass. It makes me want to play. It makes me want to create music.

Nice! I have always been curious about the AM. Jaguars...My Steinberger XL2 was/is the bass that when I get in the groove, I cant put it down and makes me want to play..However, I have considered letting it go at times for a Pre-Eb Sabre..drool
I always thought it was normal for musicians to get in a slump from time to time, but when I do get that non-interested feeling I just revert back to listen to my favorite cover songs, bass-lines to play along with by sometimes turning all the bass down on the songs device and add my own; I never buy new or different gear to fire me up. Man if I did that I'd be...
Yup I do the same..Luckily my GK combo has an Ipod input so I can play along thank God
