Can anybody remember actually getting a case with a new Bass ??

The cheap molded case that came with my Modulus VJ is the only disappointment I had with the whole transaction. But I'd rather them cut costs there than with the bass itself I suppose.
Was it free at least? I'm pretty sure when I ordered my Q5 in 1993, I had to pay for the hardcase.
In 1967 I purchased a Fender Jazz,brand new w/ case for $225. I had been playing about two years then,and it was my second bass... Two years later aroung the end of 1968 I added my first P bass w/ case,again brand new for $140...Bought them both at Sam Ash in Brooklyn,N.Y....That's how much they cost then...I still have the receipt for the jazz somewhere...
My Valenti came with a soft case and my Peavey Cirrus came with a hard one but every other bass I bought came with gig bags. I had to buy a case with my Warwick.
I will go out on a limb and say that the SKB hard-shell case included with my 2009 Fender American Standard Jazz Bass purchase is the finest case ever made!

i got an aluminium 'gun case' style routed case with my status B2.
but my sandberg (as all do) came with a nice thick padded gig bag

A little off topic but can someone comment on the quality of the Lakland cases (hsc or gig bags) like the ones for sale on bass central? They have gone up in price it seems. I think the hsc were around $100 a month ago, iirc.

Agreed Tim. What was the bass(es?) in question that were alledged not to have cases Makatak?
Early 90's was the last time. Music stores realised they could squeeze more money out of customers if they sold the case separately. Go into your local Guitar Center/ SamAsh etc. When they get a shipment in the USA(high end) guitars & basses will be in a box inside a case. They take the bass out of the case & put it on the wall. They put the case in a stack to be taken behind doors so you can't see it. On Fenders web site the cases are still listed under the specs of USA as in "This case comes with this bass" If you order your bass from an online source like Musiciansfriend.com All their mid-high end basses come with the proper case. But if you get that same bass at guitar center (who ownes musicians friend) you will have to buy the case separately. ***! Your best bet is to show the sales person that online the case comes with the bass & it better come with the bass right now... Ya feel me.
Think you stopped getting a HSC with every Fender when Fender started producing different gradations of instruments.
In '92 I bought a brand new Yamaha RBX 350 for about $300 including the Yamaha hardshell case. It may have been a "budget" bass, but it still had a real case.
As far as I know (no, I won't acronymize it), higher-end Fender (USA/Japan) has always included the case, but I don't know about others. I haven't bought many new basses, but I think all but one has included a case. Of all the used basses I've had, most have included the original case (Fender, EBMM, G&L, RGW, Roscoe, Yamaha).

I think it depends on the manufacturer.

They will sell you the real deal just afterthey run through their typical spill on why you should just buy the guitarcenter brand case. fact is that back in the day if you paid more than $500 for a bass it came with a brand new case not some slighly used case or some off brand. All my cheap Peaveys came with new cases all my Musicman, Fenders & warwicks came with cases too. Heck even the cheap stuff back in the day came with a new gig bag. If Fender says their USA basses come with a case then on or off the wall it better come with a case. I worked at two local music stores & two of my best friends & my guitarist work at Guitar Center, I'm not trying to pull your leg.
I'm not saying that it doesn't happen some where. I have just never experienced, witnessed, or heard of anything like that at my local guitar center or any other music store. I agree that if it is supposed to come with a case than it should come with a case. I have just never experienced anything like what you have described.
I've been getting Carvin catalogs as long as I can remember...
They are currently offering a "limited time offer" of a case for free, but not always the case..
