Can anybody remember actually getting a case with a new Bass ??

Not all MIA Fenders or Gibsons come with hard cases. Highway 1's come with a gig bag. So do the new MIA Specials. Add a decent hsc to the cost & you're that much closer to an Am Std, which does include a hsc. And Gibson SG Specials include a bag instead of a case also.

That was my experience in 2008, choosing between Highway 1 and American Standard Precision in Australia. Would have thought NZ would be the same.

Most Ibanez`s below the Prestige series , most Warwicks , and most if not all Squires and MIM`s . Even a MIA I saw had an " option " to get a hardcase .
Im impressed with the replies to this topic , however I was swinging more towards the manufacturers not making cases for their own basses anymore [ even though I know a lot do ] , instead leaning towards supplying a Gator or SKB type .
I was always impressed with the Ibanez cases supplied with their Basses back in the day ..... one of my early Soundgears survived our singers flatmate driving over it coming up the drive as we were loading up , blew a hinge out and thats all ... just finished recording another album on that Bass 20 years later !

Never bought a guitar or bass that came with an HSC, but I bought one for my AEB10 for $120 that quality wise was worth about $60, good thing I got an outstanding deal on the bass. The reason they lean towards supplying an SKB, Gator, TKL, etc. is it's a company already making cases so they don't have to use their own manpower, they can get a contract with them for cheaper than they can produce it themselves.

Bought a MIM Deluxe Jazz back in 2004. Case was not normally included, but the mom-and-pop Fender dealer in my town is one of the nicest stores to deal with, and the owner included the Fender molded hardshell. Purchsed a MIM fretless Jazz from him two years later, he included the deluxe gig bag(and sold me a $45.00 strap for $25.00). SBMM Ray 34 comes with reasonably nice gig bag.

Fender MIM - Fender Gigbag
Warwicks - Gigbags(don't get it..)
Sterling by Musicman - Gigbags
EBMM - HSC
Ibanez - nothing, unless Prestige
Dean - nothing
Squier - nothing
Schecter - nothing
MTD Kingston - nothing
Epiphone - nothing
GIbson - Gibson HSC

The good: My Alembic Exploiter came with a hardshell case.
The bad: It didn't arrive until three weeks after I received the bass.
The ugly: Having to lug that bass around to gigs for three weeks wrapped in a blanket.
