"Good" in someone's words may "suck" in someone else's. Styles and techniques of playing bass differ greatly. One may be excellent at playing jazz or progressive, and not know two riffs of a heavy metal style. To me,a good bass player is someone who can play many styles and variations of music. Metal, rock, blues, jazz, progressive, punk,R & B,hip hop, technotics, industrial, classic rock and so on. Not saying you have to know many styles to be a good bassist. Being close-minded about music won't get you far.
Although I particularly play rock and metal; I learned some jazz and blues and such to open new horizons in my playing style. So,a note to those of you who only favor one style or one bassist's style in particular, look around and open your ears to new things. Even if you don't like it at first, give it time! Peace,Luke
