Can you do a slim jazz bass neck with a P width nut?

Is this even possible? Is there anyone who builds their necks like this? I like a slimmer neck, but perhaps the string spacing of the Precision nut suits me better than the Jazz spacing?

You can have anything you're willing to pay for. I'm sure any custom builder will accommodate you.

    You mean like a Rickenbacker?

The 58 necks are quite thin, depth wise.

I for one can't, but I am certain it is possible, and even quite sure it has been done before.

    I appreciate the input.

On second thought, one of the finest necks I've every played was a Fender FSR Jazz bass. I don't think going with a precision width would make it better.

Classic 50's Precisions have wide nut widths (mine is actually a hair over 1 3/4") but isn't super deep front to back.

  9. Fender American Special Precision. Too bad they're out of production.

The American Pro has the 1 5/8" nut width and a '63 P rear profile, which I believe is shallower than the previous American Standards, but I'm not positive. Regardless, you might dig it.

It just so happens Warmoth just sent me one. Interested in buying it? Otherwise I'm going to replace the nut. Maple/Maple, slim taper, steel rods. PM me.

A Warmoth slim profile Precision neck might be just the ticket for you.

Any half decent luthier can do this for you. I was an apprentice once, and made a ton of nuts.

ibanez' BTB basses seem to have this profile -- wide and thin front to back and rather flat.
How much fingerboard radius do you want?

Fender '62 AVRI necks are exactly what you're talking about. 1 3/4" nut but very thin, like a jazz front to back.
