Can you help me out?

Fender Jazz's, ernie ball music mans and believe it or not i find that Spector basses are pretty good for slapping. i had one one time, and old used one and i took the time to reset the bridge right and it worked great. but thats what i found. i dunno if newer spector basses are worth it. but Jazz basses are your best bet for a beginner. and welcome to the world of bass

I don't know why anyone wouldn't believe it, Flea used a Spector NS-2 on Freakey Styley and Mother's Milk. I didn't recommend them because I don't care for the low end models and I think the Squier VM 70's Jazz is a better buy for the money and the OP is not working with a lot of money. But, from the Legend series and up, Spectors are great for any style.

yeah i think for The Red Hot Chili Peppers he used a Musicman Cutlass for Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo Party Plan he used a Spector, and for Mothers Milk he used a Spector bass to record and a musicman to tour with then Blood Sugar Sex Magik was recorded with a Wal Mach II, Stingray 5 string, One Hot Minute with an Alembic Epic

from BSSM Flea used Modulus and then Stadium arcadium he used a '61 Fender Jazz

yes i have now started doing research :P

Its possible you are right, I know he used the Spector on MM but I'm not positive about the other album(s) he used the Spector on. I thought it was Freakey Styley, but it could easily be UMPP. And I was only talking about recordings, not what he toured with.

My point was that I find it hard to believe that anyone would be surprised that Spectors are great for a slapped style, or any style similar to RHCP...since Flea actually used them on multiple albums.

yeah lol i wasnt trying to sound smart in that previous post i was just saying that i have been researching on various bass guitars that flea has used i got that info on Wikipedia

by looking at your sig you have a Spector too :P are they expensive?

I got great deals on both of my Spectors. They were both under $700 used. But they are pretty pricey new. The 5 sells for $1750 and the 4 for $1550 sticker price. The quality is very good for the price, but its still pretty steep for a lot of people.

IMO, the Legend series is good and the Rebop line on up to the USA models are very good for the money, especially used. Anything below the Legend series is not that great IMO and you would be better off with the Squier I suggested earlier. YMMV.

YMMV ? whats that lol?

aaah right i think Spectors are too much for me at the moment then maybe when i've been playing bass for a couple of years ;)

yeah the Squier's seem real nice for some reason when i think Squier i always think they wont be any good dunno why

sadly i do not but im trying to find a band at the moment have applied to a few but im always just to late!

I believe its "Your Mileage May Vary". In other words, my experience may not be the same as yours.

About the Squiers, the first time I picked up the Squier VM 70's Jazz I had no idea it was a Squier. I had just been jamming on a Marcus Miller Jazz which kind of left me cold. I saw the Squier and thought it was a more basic model of Fender, I didn't even look at the headstock. It preferred it to the Marcus Jazz bass...by a LOT! The Marcus Jazz over about $1000, the Squier is $279. When I saw the price tag, my jaw dropped and it was then that I noticed that the price tag said Squier Jazz on it. Only then did I look at the headstock and notice that it was not, in fact, a Fender. Now, the Marcus I played had dead strings and a couple other problems that could have accounted for why I wasn't crazy about it, but the fact that the Squier more than held its own, it actually dominated a $1000 is tone and playability, was an absolute shock to me. High end Squiers are the best value in basses right now. All the VMs & the Deluxe Active 5 play like they are much more expensive than they are, and they head and shoulders above the lower end Squiers and IMO better than most MIM Fenders. I wouldn't recommend it if I had any reservations. They aren't perfect, but they are easily upgraded if and when you feel the need whether its hardware or pickups. I wouldn't sweat the Squier name very much.

Plus, it will make people think you are better if they hear how good you sound and know what you play...."He gets that sound out of a SQUIER!!"...you get what I'm sayin'? ;) :smug:

yeah i like that idea too!

wow cant believe a Squier bass beats a $1000 bass!

only one problem i have is my dad has just came bk from hospital so he cant drive at the moment and i need to get to my music shop before xmas so i can see what bass guitars they have and try some out

if they dont have a Squier jazz bass i'll see what other ones that they have :P

yeah

i may get a squier i may not depends on what they have, thats why i want to go with my parents or parent cuz my dad cant drive at the mo and i can have a try out session to see what bass suits me :)
