I'd say go with distortion. It'll probably be more useful.
If you do, you should consider the unit I settled on: the Source Audio multiwave bass distortion. (I have the "pro" version.) It has the benefit of a zillion settings, some of which sound like good ol' rock n roll distortion, some of which give synthy sounds, some of which give octaver-type sounds. Now that I have it, I wouldn't even consider any of the one-trick-pony distortion pedals no matter how good they are at that one trick.
