carl thompson basses

does any one own or seen these basses in a shop?

i want to get one, but i cant find one.

I've never seen one in a shop myself, but Ray's Guitars has one from time to time (http://www.raysguitars.com/). I think the dealer there orders No-Frills basses from Carl in large quantities, and then sells them either on his website or eBay. I just checked the website and didn't see any today, but you might want to contact them just in case. There are a few people on Talkbass that own some CT basses who might want to speak up. For me, I got my instruments by calling Carl in 2003 and ordering them from him directly. Good luck.

And I'll never pass up an opportunity to post my pics:

The 32 scale one is really amazing

Thanks for the compliments both you guys.

I spoke to Carl last week. For years, I've been trying to convince him to make an extra bass and then sell in on eBay. It would no doubt earn a few more dollars for his shop, but it would also provide buyers with an opportunity to buy a CT bass without the wait. He has resisted this for many reasons - he is truly an artist at heart. The last brand-new bass guitar he put on eBay was the 10 million dollar bass in 2002, and it sold for the buy it now price of $10,000.

Anyways, I think he may make an extra bass this year since he asked me if I'd sell it on eBay for him if he did. I think he might experiment a little with this one, as he said he was thinking about doing this design for years. Of course I agreed to sell it if need be, but only time will tell if he'll take me up on my offer.

Also, he mentioned that Les Claypool called him to order another instrument. This is always exciting to see what happens in this regard. I think the last one Les ordered was the rarely seen poplar-topped fretless piccolo bass that was completed in 2001.

really cool info on carl...i try to buy a t-shirt every once in a while to help do my part :D

about les, though...what about the ebony topped one in lacquerhead? isn't that one a little more recent? i know it was cut one way in the live version and then had an extended cutaway in the video...just curious...it's a sweet CT...i like it better before the extended cutaway, though :hmm: kinda like when he lopped the horn off of the rainbow bass because of balance issues :hmm:

The antimatter bass was used on the Anti-pop tour. I don't really follow Primus, so I needed to do an online search for the dates here. It looks like this tour was in 2000. I'm pretty sure the poplar bass came a little later, like 2001, but then again, I'm not sure. From the pics on Carl's website, both basses were finished in the Boerum Pl. shop, which was vacated July 31, 2002 (also the serial number of the 10 million dollar bass).

Anyways, sorry "little-ripper" for hijacking the thread. Good luck with your search.
