Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 4!

Hey all,

I found a set of strings my new SB4000 REALLY likes a lot... I like to get my action as low as i can without buzz or just on the edge of buzz if i dig in. I can get these strings lower than similar gauge rotosounds or DRs without buzz: D'addario prosteels mediums .50 - .105

They're brilliant, have long life, sound really good for slap etc, and they are extremely cheap!

I believe they're higher tension than the other brands i mentioned and that seems to make the difference.

i think the next step/option for the SB5000 should be to offer it with or without a control plate...ala Sadowsky:

They have that already, its the B40/B50 model.

the sb5000 comes with a preamp. that is not an upgrade.

the sb4000 comes passive stock and the preamp is an upgrade.

Ah... so if you want to use an aftermaket preamp with an SB5000, you remove the current one. No biggie.

that was far sale in the in stock store a few weeks ago. i guess someone returned it.

if it had a matching headstock, i'd jump on it!

Yup - that's the same one that was on there last month. It sure looks nice. I love that Ferrari red. The purple one is pretty hot too.

and BTW the ferrari red one is the spitting image of mine except mine is lefty, has the tusq nut, drop shadow logo, and metal pup cover

Thats a good idea but since the Carvin store is not that far i could go and get one if possible.

Just plugged in and took her for a spin. Sounds great, nice mwah, all the controls work as they should, stacked bass/treble knobs turn independently. The neck feels great, too. Super-tight joint. Setup is good.. a little too much relief for my taste, but that's probably a result of the cross-country trip. Action is nice. Intonation.. who can say, really, with me playing it?
It weighs 9.5 pounds on my trusty digital bathroom scale.
I was a bit surprised when I opened the box to find zero packing material on the sides, and the bare minimum at the top and bottom. The case feels very sturdy, but still.. I thought UPS demanded a certain amount of packing material.
