That's great to hear, Carl! By the way, do you still plan on doing a video review of your bass? Also, I listened to the tracks from you CD on your Myspace page-great stuff!!! How do I go about getting a copy?

My good buddy Gus is allowing me to take his SB5000 to play with my band for a few songs on Sunday...I look forward to playing it in that setting. I have played a few at the Carvin store in Hollywood and am impressed...time to see how they work within the group!
We shall see.

I'm posting this for a few reasons... It's a little humorous in a couple spots and the tone of the SB4000 fretless is just killer. If you can listen with headphones, do so!!
This is one of the bands I play with in Denver: The Kenny Perkins band. Invalid Link Removed
This was the first or second time we'd done War Pigs (a la Cake's super cool version) in our trio. We start the tune off at about 70bpm and end up at about 90!! It just escalates like a runaway train. But the energy makes it ok. Kenny forgets the lyrics in one spot, and there's a crazy deadhead solo dancing through most of it. But, we're having fun with it.. and the tone of this great bass really comes through. I love this bass!! I ran direct out of my Carvin b1500 solid state amp (pre eq). so this is pretty much the sound of the SB4000 raw.

Definitely a good tone, doesn't do anything to help cure me of my G.A.S. for an SB5000...

Had an SB5000 for a few months.. it was the BOMB!! But i gravitated back to my comfy 4 string fretless.
I've been jonesing for the 5 for quite a while now, but I've already got several basses, so other purchases make more sense (and are more easily justified). Plus, every time I go to the bass builder on Carvin's site, I come up with a different bass. I can never really settle on options.

Another great gig with the SB5000 last night and had a session at a local studio with it this morning for a songwriter in Dallas. Went direct to record and after I laid the scratch track, the engineer walked in from the booth and looked long and hard at my bass and said, "Man, that thing sounds good. It lays a nice, solid, thick track." Made me smile, I said, "Yep, I really like it" 
Update: Heard back from the engineer this afternoon: "Just need to know about your bass Jarrett, what Carvin is that? It recorded wonderful..."

A 20 foot cable
I'm not sure what he had it running into, a DI or pre of some sort. It was pretty much just the bass.

Played Gus's SB5000 today at rehearsal...played one set with it and was highly impressed. The bass is about 10 lbs but does not feel like it when strapped on - the balance is spot on which makes the bass feel lighter.
The tone is thick! Man, that 18v pre has some serious balls!! The boys in the band really liked the tone and it's certainly a beautiful bass with the black stained flamed maple body and ebony board. Very sexy looking bass for sure.
The SB is now really on my radar; the only caveat being that I prefer a 5 string with 18mm spacing...so it may be a 4 string for me. I'm also gonna opt for the SB4001 to shave a bit of the weight off.
All in all, a great sounding bass that feels very comfy and looks like a million bucks!

It's not the preamp, it's the pickups. Even passive mode that bass will have those same balls. There might be some gain diff, but at least on mine, it's not like night/day. Keep in mind the output on an active bass should be about the same as a passive one until you boost/cut EQ.
I'm glad you liked it. In the short time I've had it, I have received more compliments on both the looks and the tone of that bass than any other bass I've owned. I'll pick it up later!
Then just get an aftermarket 18mm bridge. There's really not much difference b/w 18 and 19mm. I believe it's something like 1mm.
