I'm curious because I heard a couple of people say that the HB did not work for them (even at Carvin) and couple of others say it was the awesome.

I like Stingrays sounds (I know this is not exactly with pickup placement ect) but it sound like it would be nice aggressive sounding bass.

Here's the SB4000 build I ordered about two and a half weeks ago (she'll be ready first week of June):

Here's the details/specifics of my build:

Alder body

Vintage Cream finsh

Mahogany neck

SB headstock (with Vintage Cream finish )

Rosewood fretboard (20 Fret), with 10" Radius :

(wanted to check out the 10' Radius and see how close it is to my Fender P-bass's 9.5" raduis. If I don't like it (unlikely), I can always order another neck with the 12" radius that both of my B40's have.

Low Wide frets

Diamond Abalone Inlays

Black Pickguard

All Black Hardware (including the Volume/Tone Electronics Plate) (VVT configuration)

H50A Pickups (passive)

Bridge pickup in Black color, Neck pickup in Cream color

My buddy just picked up Jeff's old 5 string fretless and it should be coming today to him. He is really picky so I'm curious on his thoughts.

I really want to pull the trigger on one of these, but without a pick guard (which I don't want) the front electronics plate looks out of place / weird. To me really distracts from the unique beauty of the instrument. Only if Carvin offered a rear cavity option. Plus, what about a six string?

Anyone else think this way on either of those reasons or am I just too picky.

You can do a B40/B50. I think those are rear routed.

Curious, what made you go with a Mahogany neck? Just adding a little warmth? I can imagine that with rosewood is going to sink in right into mix like hot butter poured right on.

Yup, that's exactly what I hope to achieve with the mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard. Trying to warm it up and offset the 70's pickup placement on the body.

We'll see if it works. I have my doubts.

Actually, it is the opposite effect. The black bridge pickup will sit on the vintage cream part of the body, while the neck cream pickup will sit on the black pickguard area of the body. Going for a visual contrast effect.

I'm itching for a more traditional looking Alder body 4 string Jazz type (preferably SB4000) bass. I basically want this:

That said, I'd like to get some input on my options:

1. Sell fretless SB4000 and place an order with Carvin for what I want. Pay $1100 and wait 10 weeks.

2. Keep the (Ash not Alder) fretless, order a neck, pay $460 and wait 5 weeks. Swap necks. Sell fretless neck or keep for next fretless urge.

3. Just go to Guitar Center and run the racks. Find some Jazz bass that's passable. Mod if needed to make SB like.

4. Just keep holding my breath that a SB4000 exactly like I want will pop up in classifieds.

What y'all think?
