Jazz knobs on my SB5000.

The neck was set witht the proper amount fo relief but the action was too high and the saddles where as low as they could go. By removing the neck and adding a shim at the bottom of the neck pocket it raises the neck up and now the saddles are ok... There are a bunch of threads here about it..

Yeah, I wanted to get the action a bit lower on mine, too. Used a narrow strip of wood veneer for the shim, and it was good to go.

There's a good description of doing this in Gary Willis's 101 Tips book. And more good stuff about neck relief and other action adjustments.

Yea, the review was good. The author was hating on the body shape though... I get the shock from the traditional J body shape to the SB, but Carvin was never claiming it to be a traditional J bass (not that I know of). I personally love the unique shape fo the SB series, not too small and not too bulky.

The body shape has always been an issue since the bass was introduced. You probably need to expect that it's going to be mentioned in any review. I'd like a smaller body, myself, but am certainly willing to ignore it for the great sound and comfortable neck.

I prefer the SB5000 shape and styling over a jazz bass, and the Carvin B25 over both - just my personal opinion, of course:

I like the SB shape. I believe Ed Friedland said something to the tune of a Jazz bass remodeled. I'll take that. Think of it this way. You want the car analogy, let's keep it in the same ball park.

Both American made. Similar styling. IMO, being an owner of both, I like the sleek sexy look of the Carvin. Sorry, I like my picture comparison better

Just got off the phone with one of the reps at Carvin and he said a P/J pickup config isn't on their radar... He said it was a copyright infringement on fender?? Not sure about that one. I have seen many non-fender P/J configs before. Was anyone else told this?

Sounds like somebody's mouth was working faster than their brain when you talked to Carvin. The P pickup is such an obvious hole in their arsenal; it is surprising that they don't take care of it.

Some of the sales people at Carvin are, um, well... uninformed. Not all, though.

If it were a legal issue, wouldn't the same be true of a Jazz Bass variation? Yeah, pretty obvious that the guy just wanted to give a quick answer to dismiss the issue.

Balderdash, I say! If there was a patent infringement, then no one else would have P's or P/J's!

They just don't make a P pickup (and they should, IMHO...)

Got the postcard of destiny in the mail today. September 7 is the estimated completion date of my SB5000. Gonna be a very long August. Pics when it gets here.
