We're getting OT here, but this is actually a fairly commonly practiced thing... get something to placate yourself in the mean time and then either flip it upon delivery to help cover the cost of the new one or keep it if you like it enough and have the means. I've done this as well.
Alternatively, in my case, I have a few nice basses, and honestly, that helps a lot... I still greatly anticipate the new one, but I have stuff in the mean time to ease the "pain".

It's really a bigger problem for people who are 1-2 bass people, so it's the only bass, or only really nice bass, they (will) have. Those are the tough cases... and ones that probably require more beer to solve.
