Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

I think this is going to come to my home for a 10 day interview. I just gotta call Carvin to ask if the body is also Mahogany.

And see that it's clearly marked ASH body. I would assume that Banana Slug is standard alder ;)

Well, in the standard options they don't actually have a way for you to get a Mahogany neck on an Alder body.

Also, the code for the mahogany neck/body option is "NMAH" as shown in the bass builder.

on the page for the banana slug bass, the code for the mahogany neck is "MAHN".

I don't know if one is a missprint or if they are actually different codes. Plus, getting a mahogany neck on an alder body would be one of the "hidden" options that they otherwise claim don't exist in their forum FAQ.

So anyway, I'm gonna call them about it ;) I'm also going to see if they might email me a more true to life picture of that bass, because every vintage cream I've looked at, Official Carvin photo or otherwise, has looked different. That one almost looks satin and its less "deep" than the others I've looked at.

I must have been dreaming this up but I thought the SB5 came stock with a active/passive switch. I looked closer on their page and saw that they are just active. Could I add a A/P switch as an option or is that something I would have to do myself?

If you don't order it with the optional mid control, the SB preamp can but put into passive mode by pulling up the passive tone control knob.

I believe you lose the active/passive switch if you get the sweepable mid control.

I ordered the stock VVTtb , no mid control . So you're saying that the Tone knob being pulled up will make it passive. I wonder why they don't say that on their features page. I would imagine that would be a good selling point.

the action was set perfect for me! nice and low, pops really come out :cool:
dude, my honest opinion..and by all means I haven't played a JB or G&L, but... if you are looking for a single coil fender sound with a terrifice B...SB5000 its a very good choice. i have changed and tried many, many basses, and I am for sure keeping this one.
these things are the real deal.. and 10 day trial its not a bad thing to have.!

hey bud, just to re confirm, I just got mine, ordered it with standard VV, no mids and it does come with active passive switch with passive tone control, that works on active or passive!!:eek: its fantastic.

Any suggestions for pickups for my P-bass/SB meld? I've got a Wilde P-bass pickup I was thinking of using. But I've also been thinking of maybe using some Delano's like what's in the Sandbergs.
Anybody have a P/J setup they think is just perfect?
I'll post pics when the body and neck arrive.

Was looking at that meself...Let us know what the color really is. The aged white from Carvin looked more "lemon" in real life. Looking forward to your report. Love the Mahog Neck

I just ordered a Carvin B40 in BlueBurst (blue stain with blackened edges), matching headstock, Ebony fingerboard, abalone inlays and black hardware. Received 100 bucks off on options. Good deal.

I know it plays GREAT because I played one at the factory a few months ago! Very similar in sound and playability to the SB4000, just a more traditional look and cheaper price. With my options, price was less than $800. The SB pu's make the bass, along with impeccable build quality and setup.
