I've seen pictures of some SBs next to J and P bases and most of the SB body seems a little smaller. However, that elongated upper horn makes them also seem slightly bigger. Think Banana Bass Fender Jazz from the 80s.

Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

If it was a grounding issue, the noise would actually get louder when I touched the strings. It's more of a poor shielding symptom, which is very weird because Carvin's basses insides are completely covered with copper foil...
I don't think the tone knob pot is dirty because the scratching noise stops when i'm touching the metalic parts...
Is the output jack awful? I haven't really thought about that possibility.
Carvin said they could send me new replacement electronics for free and then I would have someone to replace them for me (a local luthier probably, since the only Carvin authorized dealers here in Brazil are in another city...)
That sucks, I really wasn't expecting to have this kind of problem with such a well known company like Carvin. The short circuit incident was really amateurish!
I believe you have it backwards, if it is a ground issue it will make noise unless you touch something metal on the instrument. I have basses that are grounded perfectly and in some conditions they still buzz ever so slightly until I touch the bridge or strings.
Actually it IS the other way around.

Take a read at the article this guy recommended. If your basses are grounded perfectly but still make noises till you touch the metal parts, then they're probably not shielded properly...

Talked with Jason Lollar and he was kind enough to explain to me how to ground the pole pieces. Wired it up and now no buzz.

Faulty grounding or shielding issues usually just don't happen over night. If it was fine days ago and things started to crap...maybe it's the preamp. It's very simple to replace, just a couple connection.

Haha, to be honest, I also thought that way (that we were grounding the strings by touching them), till I read that!
I also only noticed the tone knob thingy after that incident (coincidence maybe? I don't know). But I do believe it is very likely that the preamp was damaged... will wait for the replacement electronics and see if the problem gets solved. Good thing Carvin has one of the best support service I've ever seen
Well this sucks. Tonight I pick up my SB5 and played it in active mode for about 10 minutes then I start to hear some popping and crackling then it just completely dies. The batteries are new, and i just received the bass 4 days ago. been playing it in passive mode until tonight and this happens. It still works in passive mode.
i read that duracell batteries are little shorter so they cant make good contact, people said that if you raise the battery everything will be ok.
These are energizer batteries but you're right ! I opened the battery compartment and notice that the battery cavity is just slightly too big for a standard 9v. They were bouncing around in there, so I took some electrical tape and folded it to the thickness of the space between the battery and cavity wall. Now they are snug and tight and don't move. Problem solved!
That happened to my brand new SB4001 too, but it wasnt a matter of battery compartment size. The batteries were goddamn HOT when I checked them, then when I opened the knob plate I realized that the soldered wires connecting the 9v+9v batteries were touching the blend knob interface, resulting in a short circuit. Result of that was 2 sets of batteries lost and a slightly damaged pre amp
. Make sure to check that in your bass too.
The problem is that there is no "standard" 9v size. Every manufacturer is different. Glad that the problem was solved.
Music man basses have a great 9v compartment it actually squeezes itself around the battery. I may put a little piece of double sided tape on the inside of the cavity , that should work nicely.

I thought I would through this out to the group first.
I have come to the conclusion that I sound snifigently cleaner on 5 strings that have neck pickup (if it is a 2 pickup bass) further back (specifically on the B). I have a heavy attack and it shows on any J 5 (less with the SB).
So as much as I love the tone and playability I'm moving my SB5K
