Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

I'm still thinking about that non routed B50 option. That looked pretty sweet. Just not sure what electronics I would put in. I really dig the Carvin stuff.

I wonder if they would make one with everything (including a rear J pickup) minus a neck pickup and I could have someone just route it and drop a P pickup in it and wire it to the SB electronics?

What's a good 5 string P-bass pickup that is sort of like a J99A

If it looks prettier than it's pictures then it's a truly beautiful bass because the pictures look great. Congrats on your new bass. It's a real beauty.

I've got the carvin preamp in that warmoth body. I really like the Bill Lawrence Wilde P46 for a P pickup. However, until some more people try some PJ combos with the J99s I think its a bit of a crap shoot. Also, the more of us making attempts to fill the P / PJ gap that Carvin is isn't, the more likely it is they'll see the market for such a bass as legitimate.

Hi Jarret
Here is my take on what might help you if you go that route.

One of the things that I like about the J99 stuff is that it is reminiscent (to me) of Nordstrand J 60s wind. Its like that meets the clearish mid-range of Aero (the Nordstrands have a semi-distinct classic mid character going on.

So my suggestion would be to go either with a Nordstrand or Aero.

I've never owned an SB so this may be out my butt:

I don't think any SB would have neck dive. sufficient upper horn length plus small headstock and small tuners.

Mine is not chambered but IMHO a proper strap will fix neck dive issues on any bass. As for the preamp, im a vol/blend guy as well, imho there is no noticeable change in tone with this setup. However the vol/vol is more flexable because you can dial in the exact amount of each pup you want. I tend to run them both wide open, or either full neck, or full bridge so i dont mind the trade off. Also you wont have the active/pasive option with the vol/blend. Again, not an issue for me, but your needs may be different.

Oh I thought only the mid sweep option got rid of the active/passive

I have a chambered SB5000 (got a solid color, but chose the chambered option - so same body weight as an SB5001). I also chose a volume/blend versus getting the standard V/V/T. I opened up a large discussion on this topic a couple of months back, and there was much discussion on the pros and cons of that volume setup. 2 things:

1) Zero neck dive with chambered. Perfect balance, just as I have with my non-chambered SB 4000.

2) With J-basses, trying to solo any pickup creates the inevitible hum, whether you have a blend or a V/V/T - so I'm always staying at full volume and letting the two pickups humbuck each other - I can't tolerate the humming. I think I probably would have stuck with the V/V/T setup - if indeed the blend setup causes a slight decrease in output/punch (which from that prior thread is largely conjecture). If there isn't a decrease in punch with going the blend route (again, it's inconclusive), then I do think a single volume knob is more convenient.

After visiting this thread a million times I finally placed my order for a SB5000 today.

-Swamp Ash body (requested light weight)
-Classic White with pearloid pickguard
-Maple neck , birdseye finger board, abalone dots
-White Tusq nut, Dunlop strap locks, chrome hardware

Places my order early this afternoon on the phone they said I should receive my email order confirmation very shortly and to check it over but nothing yet. Kind of under the weather so I'm hoping I told them all the correct options.

This is gonna be a tough 5-8 weeks.... patience is a virtue but one I admittedly lack.

Thanks, totally looking forward to it! Your enthusiasm hasn't towards the SB 's made it easy waiting this long to buy one.

These basses have been calling to me for the last couple years unfortunately I kept having amp and pa issues so had no budget for the bass. Finally got that all squared away so this is going to be the year of the bass (or two).

Just got an Allparts neck and some Hipshot Ultralites to finish up a J bass build I started 3+ years ago and should have that done here in a few weeks. Hopefully that will keep me occupied till the SB shows up.

Funny thing about the SB is that I built it about 30 times on the builder, changed color spec's etc. and ended up ordering it exactly as I first spec'd it.... except for the swamp ash, I went back and forth on that until I actually made the call.

Is it? That's cool. My first good bass was a SUPER heavy mid 70's Jazz 3 bolt, maple with pearloid blocks. It was cream but had aged to a banana pudding in places from a lot of smoke (or at least that's how the case smelled). It came with a broken black pickguard which I replaced with a tortoise shell and then after breaking the neck multiple times I replace it with a Warmoth neck and a pearloid pick guard. Loved the look but the Warmoth neck and steel rods made the bass 14lbs and just ruined the tone...

I poorly cut & paste a pearloid pickguard on this one to see what it would look like-

Grab an extra guard or two for an instant look change! I got the vintage white with tort and an extra black one too. Accessories are usually 50% off.

I'm a V/B guy myself but prefer the V/V with the SB5K.

Strap suggestion.

I don't notice neck dive but I will say this, if there is any concern at all get the MONO Betty strap. That strap will hold any bass in any position that you want it to without any issue and is super comfortable.

I have one other bass with the VVT design and I always run them both full. I usually prefer VBT but since Seiko designed it originally as a VVT , I didn't want to mess with the mojo of it. He obviously chose VVT for a reason and from what I hear on TB it's perfect like that.
Btw.. I ordered the SB5 , should be in this week.
