Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

I just bought an SB5000 (used) and the stacked bass/treble does not work and the push/pull mid sweep seems to turn the bass on(out) and off (in). I like the bass so if it is an easy fix I would keep it. Is this a known failure mode? I've wrked on older Fenders with wires and pots but this PCB thing has me confused.
Any input would be appreciated.

I don't think the mid sweep is a push-pull. Sounds like you may have the regular V/V/Tone(pp active passive)/stacked TB.

If the bass is on when it's pulled out (passive), it may be dead batteries, since it works when you put it in passive mode. If you have those electronics.

I'd put new batteries in and see if that works.

99% chance it's just the batteries are dead like Grateful says, since it works when you bypass the preamp (knob pulled out).

Yeah, that's me, lol. I noticed this hiss after that episode. I'm considering the possibility of the short circuit having damaged something inside... what do you think?

Obs: the soundclip was private, I made it public, see if it works now!

Well look what finally arrived.

I gotta admit, I was skeptical in the beginning but after 20 mins of jamming on this thing..... Well lets just say I had to step outside to cool off and smoke a cigarette, because this baby is HOT!!
No problems with electronics ( so far) finish and setup is amazing and I even got a little added bonus- I originally just ordered a stock maple neck but I got a maple neck with a little Birdseye finger board. It sounds so good in passive AND active mode I'm having a hard time decided which one to choose. Thank to Jarrett for reassuring me I wouldn't miss the Fender Deluxe V , he was right.

Wow, that's nice.... That's not normally a combo I like (natural ash and maple board) but that is gorgeous! The tort guard is perfect and it really works with the cream pickups.

Can't what till mine is done....4.5 - 7.5 weeks to go....

Thanks , I basically modeled it after my Music Man Stingray, same ash/maple with tortoise Pg setup but my MM has a Black pickup. I really like the look of wood versus a paint job. All my basses have wood with clear coat. I tried to keep this SB simple and classic, the cream pickups really make it pop in my opinion . You're gonna love yours , this is a keeper for life and has replaced my MM.

I used to have a really light ash Stingray 5 fretless and it just sat in the mix so well.... should have never sold it... anyway that's why I went with swamp ash myself. Cosmetically I'm trying to make it look like my 70's Jazz.

I know what you mean. My MM always sounds perfect on stage , even my old band mates said (after i had to take a few weeks off) "man it's so nice to have you and that MM back with us, it just lays the foundation so nice" . Granted I haven't played this SB live yet but I have no doubt that I will be able to get my sound "there". There's so much tone to play with how could I not. I'll never sell my MM its been with me for 18 years but now it time to let this SB do the talking.

Umm..not sure if one of the noise is from you soloing the pickups and you're hearing the 60 cycle hum. (Which kind of sounds like it to me.) Or other power issues like fluorescence lighting, computer monitor, washer/dryer etc... or in my case the Dishnet box. Or you have a poor ground issue within. Check for some loose or poorly soldered ground wire.

The tone knob noise, try some pot/tuner cleaner?

Or, the preamp has sustained some damage from the battery wire incident. Which is totally probable since +18v was being shorted out to ground.

Or, chuck that awful, but fancy looking output jack in favor of a standard stereo jack. My first B24's jack starting to crap out causing poor contact when engaging the minus side of the battery, along with some horrible crackling noises when touching the instrument cable while plugged into the bass. Carvin sent me a new jack, but I installed a Switch Craft stereo jack instead and have no issues after that. My second B24 is doing fine with the orig jack, thus far.

SB5000 gas is hitting hard again.

Question for you guys (like VIC) who own multiple J basses, do the SB series seem "smaller" than a standard J bass body? Is it more like a regular or dinky J?

The SB and standard J bass are the same in body size. Roughly 13.5" x 20.5". I will say that the upward horn on the SB makes it a little more comfortable when standing .
