I own several basses with the tung oil. My oldest is around 16 years old and yes it does get a dirty look to it after a few years but I personally like the "worn" look of it. I find that because they allow the natural sweat and oil from your hands to build up in the neck, it almost seems that after time the neck becomes "customized" to your hand. It's hard to explain but the natural oils that come from my hand creates a slickness to the feel of the neck as if it was made just for your hands. I've got a MM that has been with me a long time and the neck looks darker and dirty but it is soooo smooth. Natural body sweat and oil are far superior than any store bought oil IMO. Trust me you'll love it. On the other hand I've tried the poly finishes and to me they all felt sticky and non-organic.

Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

I talked to a guy who chose the stainless frets and he said he really could not tell a difference. Now maybe in say... 10 to 15 years I could possibly see them holding up better than nickel but as far as changing the sound,,, I don't think so.

Last weekend I had the great pleasure of playing the SB4000. While I don't know much about technical aspects of the bass I can say that it was one of the nicest playing basses I've ever had my hands on. The neck was fast and the fingerboard was slick. I think the bass was used as it had flat wounds on it and it was setup like it was just waiting to be played. It had the honey burst finish and was beautiful. GC was asking $699 for the bass and it was worth every penny. If you guys already own one of these you are blessed. This coming from a P bass owner for many years.
Nice! I'm about to change my mim jazz to a pj. Ill be putting a Marcus Miller pickguard on it and doing some extensive routing. A P bass is the only thing I'm gassing for, now that I have the Carvin.

Just finished a Warmoth PJ body, I'm waiting on a Carvin SB style neck I ordered to finish it out. Going for that best of both worlds scenario. Hopefully it will compliment my SB nicely.
This is the neck off my SB4K. I'll swap it out for the new carvin neck when it comes, but I couldn't resist getting it playing. I really love these necks. It would be so much easier if Carvin just offered a PJ to begin with.

I don't play 5 stringers much these days. I would be interested to see someone do something like this in a 5, but it's not worth the investment for me to do it personally.
