Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

You're welcome to give the SB4 a go when it gets delivered in April. At which you can try out the B24 too.
I am seriously considering pulling the trigger on an SB5000. I would prefer a maple board. Carvin only offers that with a tung oil finish. I've only played poly finishes on maple FBs. What do I need to know about the tung oil finish? What care and maintenance will it require? How does it feel and sound compared to poly?
Thanks for the response. Does anyone have the 5 pc maple neck? I am considering it because I think it would add more stiffness and stability. What are your thoughts?
I looooooooooove the feel of the tung oil finish. No stiction on left hand position shifts. I've got a fair number of playing hours on mine, which I bought used; seems plenty durable, and I'm using stainless rounds.
The only maintenance I know of is to wipe it with lemon oil twice a year or so.
It doesn't bother me at all, but the finish does darken quicker than a poly finish. A feature, not a bug, IMO. Looks good to me.
Haven't experienced any neck problems with the one-piece maple neck. And even with the season change, it hasn't needed much truss rod tweaking.
Won't change the sound that much with a maple neck but it has a great "dry" feel. You can feel the wood vs feeling a slick finish. My favorite neck finish is either Tung oil or Birchwood Casey's Tru-oil. Either can build up dirt on the finger board but a little maintenance like wiping down with some appropriate guitar cleaner/polish will go a long way in keeping pretty. If it gets really bad an old tooth brush, damp cloth and a dab of Murphy's Wood Soap will clean it right up. If it gets worn it's extremely easy to reapply.
Was considering that option myself. I would think it would effect the sustain and attack of the note being the neck would be stiffer. I want to mine to be 70's Jazz'esque so I'm going to get the standard maple neck. Waiting for a refund for a returned bass to go thru so I can place my order. Hopefully soon.
I took a chance on them recently on my latest Carvin bass and I have zero regrets in doing so, I take that back... I regret not having gone with stainless also on the previous Carvin bass
I like the click of it as I think it sounds great when slapping. But my current order of SB has stock frets as do my last B24. But others here doesn't feel it makes much of difference. I don't think it make a significant difference..YMMV, though.
