Ok problem (grounding hum that stops when you touch metal, pops when you touch metal) NOT solved. Same issues PLUS a loud crackling noise when I plug into any amp. I called Carvin and they suggested putting aluminum foil in the cavity or they can send me another preamp. I found both suggestions unacceptable. Finally, they suggested I send the bass back AT THIER EXPENSE to be checked out. So tomorrow it's going back to Cali! It sounds like I'm the first to have a problem with these SB basses but, that's the way it is!
It's going to be modded to be a P+J with some deep routing of the body to get to a more manageable weight. I'll end up soloing the P and leaving the J pickup so there isn't some massive hole for no reason. Shhhh! Just between us.
Wow, this is my plan exactly. I asked Carvin if they'd sell a pickguard with no routing but the did not get back to me with an answer.
So, I may have to shape and route a pickguard myself (boo hoo). Other than that, the swap from JJ to PJ should be pretty easy.
I ordered my SB5000 5 weeks ago. They said 10 weeks to build. The status card arrived showing a completion data that was about 7 weeks. I got e-mail saying it was done. With shipping the total time will end up being 6 weeks!

Also, when I sent mine back, it was almost 6 weeks took I got it back. So, prepare to wait some more
Could be the preamp itself, but my guess is the jack. They'll probably just swap out the electronics...
I had the same issue with my first B24. I replaced their "fancy" jack with a switchcraft stereo jack and it's been fine since.
I think it's a better move to let my guitar tech swap the jack first before sending the bass back to Cali. That would only take a few days as oppossed to several weeks. The bass looks, plays, feels and sounds amazing. But it seems like they have QC issues.

I bought a used SB5K, and had trouble with pops and crackling with any slight movement of the plug in the jack. Was able to fix it myself.
Took out the two screws on the jack plate and gently pulled it out from the body. Instead of using the sleeve of the plug to turn the battery on (the usual thing), the factory jack has a small leaf spring switch that gets pushed closed.
The fix for the crackling was just to use some Deoxit to clean the contact points on the leaf switch. Done!
Just noticed the 12" radius fingerboard is no longer standard on the SB4000. Probably easiest for Carvin to make everything 14".
That was one of the things that stood out to me when I used the bass builder to fake build one of the new PB4s... 14" was the standard.
