Thanks guys! The more I play it, the more I love the the sounds coming from this bass. It sounds good no matter where the pickups are set, but I think my favorite right now is where it is in that recording.

You know, I thought about it, and if I'm going to get rid of the white stripe, I'm going to do it right and get an actual single layer guard from Tony. My gear OCD would probably go nuts if I just painted it. Let me know if you drop off a guard and I don't have to send him mine?
I dropped off my white guard yesterday so Tony could make a template. So, 5sg, and anyone else with an SB5000 that wants a custom guard (all kinds of custom materials, and he'll definitely work with you to make it how you want it) go ahead and give him a ring. http://www.pickguardian.com
Also, while I was there, I had him grind me a new TRC so that it would match the pickguard. It's kinda different seeing the truss bullet in there, but I think it's neat.
I like your new guard, plong. It fits that bass quite nicely.

Thanks, Woody. I think it came out very nice. I had this idea, and Tony went out and found the perfect piece of plexi for it.
As far as a truss template, I'm pretty sure he did. If not, I can drop off my old black one.

That looks awesome brother, and seeing that truss rod is surprisingly cool! THANKS for dropping off that pickguard. I'll drop him an email when I get home from work tonight, about both the pickguard and TRC.

Anyone have any pics of the different logos? Especially the drop shadow ones. I've always wondered what those two look like.
I know that Carvin calls it a hand guard, but I've always known them as bell covers?
I like them for two reasons. First and foremost is the look - they just look awesome. The second that it provides a nice touchstone for several techniques. If you try to play with a floating thumb it can help, especially when you're getting started, as a guide for your vertical hand movement. I also like to have it there when I slap as it helps keep things controlled and even - reminding me to use more wrist and less arm.
For me the hand guards looks cool, but totally disrupts my playing technique. I have an old Jazz and a SB with it on...don't dig them too much. I'm not an "controlled" technique player as the guy above me. I'm all over the place.
I don't care for handguards, either. They just get in my way, both fingerstyle and slap. I'm a big believer in economy of motion, so it's not that I make big gestures with my right hand; I want unfettered access to the strings from bridge to the end of the fingerboard for plucking, thumping, and muting.
+1. They get in my way. I play some songs with a pick, and in others I tend to play fingerstyle in different postiions over the pckups. When I tried a cover, it took away many of my preferred playing positions. And I never understood the functional/practical purpose of a bridge cover.
I received my new SB500 a few weeks ago. The construction and looks are flawless, the tone is excellent... But, I'm having grounding issues at home and a few rehearsal studios. I'm getting a hum that stops when I touch the metallic knobs or control plate. What's the best way to handle this? Is it a flaw with the bass? Has anyone else experienced this?
