That's a pretty nice tone even with a bad recording. I bet the bass sounded great live.

it was recorded off the floor with a TASCAM recorder.
its a salsa tune originally recorded by Jerry Rivera, and Ruben Rodriguez on bass. (da man!) hope you like and sorry for the screw ups, this band hasn't rehearsed for at least a year :)

Have had my SB5000 now since August, have done every gig on it except for two. It's great. The tone knob, however, has a very small window between totally off and totally on. Would a new pot fix this?

Also, have people here replaced the pickups? What do people like for a more old school sound out of their SB5000?

...And adjusting the tone and cutting the high's on the EQ isn't getting you there?? I can get old school on any of my six SBs no problem.

I have a 2 band pre on a plate that I've used in another bass and I too thought the passive tone knob wasn't very responsive. It is an audio taper pot too...

I installed a passive tone w/ push/pull, active/passive switching on my SB with a 3 band and it works very well. Although, not sure if I'll ever use this tone knob.

Has anyone experimented with new pickup configs? I love the sound of the bass active, not as impressed with the passive, but have always been a passive player. That and the active electronics don't play well with some of my gear. I was looking at some Barts, Norstrands, or even some Curtis Novak 5-string J's.

Like many topics, there are lots of arguments about this here on TB. My guess: It likely wouldn't be possible to consistently tell one from the other in a sound sample.
