Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 8!

An update on my SB5000: There are no updates.

I sent it back to have the headstock correctly finished on 4/19 with the quoted expectation that they would have it for a week or maybe two, tops. Almost 5 weeks later and I've heard nothing. Hopefully it's delayed because they're doing a photoshoot of it to be included in the next catalog! LOL

Seriously, though, I think I'm going to call today to get a status check. I called 2 weeks ago and they confirmed that they checked it in on 4/26.

My phone call was timely. After some investigation and a callback, John told me that it was actually in the packaging for shipping process and I'd probably get an email later tonight that said that my bass was leaving on a brown truck. Sweet! New bass porn scheduled for late next week!

5sg, hopefully yours will be on that same truck to the San Diego Airport!

I wouldn't pay for the upgrade to the top, which is a really nice spalt top, and then cover it up with a pickguard. :rollno: But it's still a sweet bass. I like the plain fingerboard option.

There is an absolutely stunning SB5000 on the Carvin Facebook page.

Well, aesthetics are personal of course, but me, I actually like using a pickguard to offset and contrast the wood. I think it looks great.

Thanks, jazz41. It's what I've been dreaming of since December or so. Like, literally, I would think of spalted maple when my head hit the pillow, and I would smile, and sleep from a good place. When it came time to order, I could have spent another $100 to have some input about the piece of wood being used, but I rolled the dice that they would try to make it look as nice as possible. Needless to say, they sure did! One thing that you can just barely see from that photo is it's got a really nice, subtle flame all across the top. It's just spectacular.

As far as pickguards go, I just never bought into the orphaned floating control plate on a Jazz bass. They just look incomplete (to me) without the pickguard line, regardless of the topwood. That being said, I had a custom pickguard built while my bass was sent back, so that it will retain the line of the guard, but is semi-transparant so you can still see the wood. I really can't wait to see it on my bass!

Since the cat's out of the bag as to my options (I could have slow-played it, but was too excited to see my bass LOL) I'll go ahead and spoil one more: Icon headstock! Here it is:

Carvin had left it unfinished, or "natural', or whatever you want to call it, and I tried to wrap my head around keeping it, I really did. But every time I saw it, and saw the beautiful sunsetburst on the body, that headstock just looked unfinished, in the bad way. So I sent it back. The guys were super nice, and sent the UPS truck to my house for pickup.

Are you planning on getting it back with the headstock re-done?
