Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call!

I'm trying to register my bass online. Anyone know where the serial numbers can be found on a SB5000? I notice they don't have a SB5000 to select in the registration process either, just SB4000. Guess I'll use that.

Edit: I used the number that was on my input jack plate. Hoping that's the right one :)

Yup, they're picking up noise, that's how you know they're working! :)

I found the J99As to be relatively quiet for a single coil, but there's still no escaping the noise unless you run both pickups together. The H50As cured this, of course.

I literally couldn't make that noise happen with my bass, even with the amp at full volume and the pickup 6 inches away from my computer monitor viewing this page. What color is the dot on a black J99A pickup?

not sure what color the dot is. It's translucent. The whole thing with single coil noise is that it's environmental. That's why you not experiencing noise does meant it won't be incredibly noisy in another environment.

I've had single coil guitar pickups in front of these monitors and they have been fairly noisy, but not getting it with the pickups in this bass. It's not a huge issue to me personally, as I run the pickups full in most cases, just curious why I can't recreate it. Not saying you are lying, just wondering if we have the same pickups or not.

Just curious... why are you going with the DiMarzio Ultra Jazz instead of the H50's???

I'm assuming that the Ultra Jazz are stacked hum cancelling pickups instead of single coils. Is there a big tone difference between these and the HB50's?

I saw the video that KayCee posted showing the tone difference between the J99's and the H50's and there was quite a bit of difference. The H50's sound great finger style, but you lose a lot of bite when slapping.

the dimarzio is 2 side by side coils with instead of a stack. I think they sound better than stacks in general though I've not heard the carvins.

My biggest concern is weight, and I've heard the B50 may be a little lighter - by maybe half a pound.

I play a Lakland right now though, that is right about 10 lbs., so as long as it isn't heavier than that, I don't have an issue with it.

Also, I love having a pickguard. It protects the finish and it just looks dang cool.

My SB 5000 weighs 10lbs exactly. Standard alder body, maple neck. I'm thinking of replacing the carvin tuners with Cloverleaf Hiphot ultralites.. for no other than cosmetic reasons- The carvin tuners are of very high quality, i just like the look of big ol' cloverleafs. My point being, that will lighten the bass up even more!

I was curious about that too.. The H50's are really close to the J99's in my opinion and sound great for finger style and probably sound great for slap too if you slightly bump the bass and treble a little. I've owned the Dimarzios and they have a naturally scooped "hi fi" nature. Will probably sound really great for slap, however, i couldn't ever really get a nice round finger tone out of them. It really depends upon what your ultimate goal is for the bass.

That's a beauty!

One observation though - I played a show with the 10 lb Lakland today and I'm so sore I feel like I was in a fight... lol.

I normally play with another bass that is about 8.5 lbs.

I'm starting to wonder now if the SB would be too much. Man, this sucks because I really love those things!

Both of mine are J99As and there's plenty of hum. (http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9355820) I hope the ultra jazz pickups fit with no mods. If it requires mods, I'll probably return them and get the carvin stacks. I don't feel like doing any routing!
