I can't tell for sure if that's Ash or Alder on the back. It doesn't specify the Ash upgrade in the list, but that grain is pretty Ash-like. If I didn't have one, I would be all over that thing.

Yes that is sweet- Chuck Webb's honey burst is similar to that one but with black pickups.. now THAT is a great looking bass.

uh.. yeah... you could say that. However, Marcus really pioneered that amazing tone.. I remember listening to David Sandborn 20 years ago and hearing marcus' tone just lit a fire under my butt! He really opened a door tonally for bassists.. Like i've said before, i've spent a lot of time and $$$ with fender Jazz basses, mainly chasing tone and feel.. The SB5000 covers all those beautiful "fender" tones -STOCK!!! The rest is up to us!!

Box with my ultra jazz pickups showed up today. Unfortunately, inside was a tele lead pickup. Very unprofessionally packed I might add. This was from Don's Music City. I called them and they asked me to send it to another guy who got my pickup and then told me they'd ask the other guy to ship me the pickups he got. I told them to just give me a refund. I may just order the carvin pickups. Where was that clip again?

Update - Just ordered the carvin stacks. I've liked everything else of theirs lately so why not? :)

I don't find it Warwick like at all. In fact, it's not even as thick as my L2000 jazz necks. If definitely thinner than my Stingray neck. I find it very comfortable.

Update: I contacted Carvin today via email. They offered to make me a new bass but I declined. They are sending me a tort guard. Great customer service and I must say that I like this bass more today than yesterday!! :bassist:

Here's a pic of my new SB5000 that showed up a few hours ago. I will try to get a better pic tomorrow in the sunlight. The finish is the sunset burst but it looks pretty dark in the picture.

So far I am pretty impressed with this bass. Weight was a concern but the bass doesn't feel too heavy. According to the bathroom scale it's weighing in at 9.4 lbs. The construction is spot on and everything feels to be finished nicely. After reading some of the reviews on here I was a little worried about the upper horn bothering me, but it doesn't seem to be a problem sitting or standing. I can definitely see why people have said that Carvin could be charging a lot more for these basses. I have paid twice this much for a couple of basses that weren't as nice as this SB5000. So far this bass seems like it's going to be a keeper, but I'll give it a few more days before I make the final decision.

I am glad you posted this... I was just going to ask if the 4 string neck was really that bad for feel. I do have l2000's with the jazz profile and profile, and if it's better than either of those, then I wouls say thats definately not a warwick feel. Thanx for the post... I am eyeing up a sb4000 more and more. Anyone have any concerns w/ pickups electronics? I have never been a huge fan of the pre-amps on older/other carvins, and i heard this is a re-worked system?

by the way, I discovered that the pickups were adjusted insanely high. almost touching the b string on the low side above the 15th fret. I lowered them so there was 3/16 clearance and the bass sounds much better. A lot of the thuddyness I've heard on clips of this bass is due to magnetic interference of the pickup on the strings IMO...

The neck on the SB4000 is very comfortable to me. This bass sounds great and I have no issues with the preamp or pickups.
