I dislike the SKB case. The handle feels flimsy and the plastic rods that hold the handle in place are not secured.

Case that comes with 2013 Fender American Standard Precision?

For the record, my G&G case does have a cover for the compartment. It's an older model and could be why, though. Fender should resolve that case issue or let buyers know what case they're getting. If I'm expecting a SKB, yeah I'm gonna be pissed I didn't get one!
Yeah, the salesman at Musician's Friend confirmed that it would be the SKB molded case. It even says it on their website. I feel kind of ripped off because I need a roadworthy case more than a G&G type case.
I'm trying to figure out what another roadworthy precision bass case would be?

My 2011 Jazz came with an SKB case and it has a flap over the storage compartment.
Honestly, I always favoured the old cases that used to come with American Standards in the 90's. Not sure how to describe em, gun case style? Clamshell?? I've put up countless kijiji ads over the past couple years seeking these cases for both J's and P's with no luck.
I love my old chainsaw case. I use it when I need a hard case. I use quality gig bags most of the time.
I wish Fender would knock $150 off the price of a bass and skip the case. I have way to many around.
I inquired about this earlier in the year, and the reply I got was that all AmStand basses, from early 2013 on will be shipping with the G & G ... The SKB is no longer available from Fender, but some could still be in stock and available from Fender dealers ... take it FWIW ...

I feel ya pain brotha. Gigging tends to 'shred' my cases in one way or another but the SKB I drag my #1 in takes a beating and does not show the 'scars' half as much. My shiny new week old G&G won't look that way for long. Sure is pretty though
I just bought an American Standard fretless Jazz from GC and got the "new" Fender case. Made in Vietnam and after 2 weeks I'm already having problems with the latches. Was really disappointed not to get a made in USA SKB. May have to look at a trade at some point.
Somebody's listening, maybe?
Note that the SKB aftermarket case pictured earlier in the thread doesn't, though. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Slightly odd that Fender took this route. I don't mind the G&G cases, but the SKB cases I got with my 2009 P and 2011 J are fantastic. Probably the best cases I've ever got packaged with an instrument, (although I quite like the EBMM cases).
It seems to be since 2008, apart from the 'upgrade' to CS pickups, this series seems to be less value for money as time goes on (although perhaps actually the G&G is worth more?!)
The strings are DEFINITELY worse, even though that's a minor thing.

I paid the price I did for the bass expecting the skb case, which is not cheap. Not sure if it is okay to talk pricing, but I paid $1k for American Standard Precision, Sunburst, Maple neck. How does this compare to what others are paying?
If I knew I wasn't getting the skb case, maybe I would have more seriously considered the American Special Precision.

Also, my new bass has a somewhat stained-looking reddish slotch of wood grain on the headstock and a quite obvious difference in grain on the front of the body between two pieces of alder that must have been glued. Is this par for the course, or should I expect more flawless pieces of wood? The wood on my 1996 American Standard Jazz is perfect, looks like one piece of alder, and the neck is unblemished.

Call MF and complain about it. Before you do call Fender and ask them what you are suppose to have so you will be armed with amunition (hopefully). You will like the lighter SKB case with the easy to pop large latches.

Just as a point of Reference.
The "It Comes with a Case Law" began when a Big Box Store was suddenly selling stuff $100 cheaper than anyone else....as in BELOW DEALER COST. They did so by REMOVING the case from the deal. Having said that, there's no law about getting Creative with a Dealer. I NEVER buy a Fender Bass without a Tweed Case.....that's just me. We work out the difference in price between the cases and it's a done deal.
Also keep in mind that if you have a HUGE Company and you have to put 1,000 instruments a day into cases in order to ship them and empty a warehouse, the shipping folks get creative, too. If there are ZERO Wilie E Coyote cases in stock..and Wilie says it's a week before they can get you more..but you have 4,000 Acme cases over behind the water cooler, what would YOU do?
And, if I may.....Despite being back here only a short time, I keep reading about folks who buy basses from stores which have a VERY POPULAR 30 Day (or more) RETURN policy and then act surprised when they find Cat Hair, Doritos and Ham Sandwiches in the case and Scratches and dents in the guitars/basses.
Let's just imagine that your NEW bass has been sold and returned 5 times by Hundreds of guys and gals who do that very thing for Sport. We KNOW they do cuz they talk about it right in this Forum. Now YOU get it and it has problems......cuz in reality, it's a USED Bass. How do you Treat a Rental Car?
Moral of the Story: "You Can't Always Have Your Best Price Bass and Eat it Too".
