Cenk Erdogan - fretless classical baritone guitar player

Pino used to set his basses up with someone else making the adjustment as he played, so that the instrument was intonated to him. Where he visualised the pitch. It's difficult to explain, but if you visualise it slightly somewhere else, you'll play constantly slightly somewhere else.

In short, why not lines? Why not?

Don't get me wrong, he's a lovely player. Real sensitivity. And on a fretless instrument in that range, brave. But I feel he does his skill quite a great disservice, and for what reward?

Well it sounds pretty good to me!

And that is good enough. Pino has mentioned that on occasion a producer has pitched his playing against a tuner and mentioned so and so is slightly this way or that way. Pino asks if it detracts from the track, is it that discernible? I'm just saying, I'd like to hear him with lines as well. That would be interesting.

I suppose because it's an entirely different approach playing without visual aids. It requires tapping into the intuition, manifesting the pitch internally to a higher degree, developing a closer relationship with the instrument. Some feel that playing with lines is like using a cheat, and that they will ultimately serve as a handicap. I certainly wouldn't criticize him for this, rather, I commend any player that challenges themselves to this degree. Classical players have done this for years.

Lines are probably helpful for some, in particular if you had to sight read I would imagine, but does not guarantee being in tune. Or that if you're playing a major 3rd above the root you'll sound right against that root note. Typically that maj 3rd is a bit 'flat' to sound correct.

I prefer unlined.

Lovely touch, great playing in a higher register on a fretless instrument. Out in the open. But slightly flat throughout because...

Could be because humans tend to veer towards just intonation rather than well tempered intonation in the absence of frets, keys, and other mechanical factors corralling them into true tempered. Apparently just intonation is what the human ear and brain, if left to themselves, prefer over the stretched intervals we learn to accept as “correct” in Western music.

A cappella vocal ensembles and scale free instruments (such as strings) will often shift to just intonation when not playing with fixed pitch instruments.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was playing with just intonation.

Stunning piece of music, a hauntingly beautiful instrument, and a brilliant musician regardless of whatever else was done to that recording. I don’t know enough superlatives to adequately describe that performance.

Thank you for posting it. :)

Glad people are enjoying it, I hope I can see him live next time he comes to the US. There's so many talented musicians all over the world that we don't often hear of in our Western bubble.

Too true.

I was fortunate to be introduced to music outside the Western tradition at an early age. It triggered in me a deep interest, respect and appreciation for all forms of music. I listen to whatever I can get my hands on. And I end up liking the lion’s share of it too.
