Change pots on G&L L2500

Man, I love talkbass...

Thanks sgd, I'll try to find a goog quality one arround were I live, if not I'll try with the one I boght, and if I don't like it I'll stay with the original one.

One more question. Will I notice quality sound diference when changing the wiring and the pots with much higher quality?

Thanks again.

Electro-Switch is my #1 choice for mini-toggles. After that, Alco or Carling.
That's just my personal preference, but it's based on rate of failure in equipment we use at work. The Electro-Switch stuff seems to hold up better.

I usally get them from Digi-Key or Mouser.

well, the cavity is shielded with paint. As for the wires, I want better wiring because the stock ones are really bad and we´re talking about a big part that´s passive. If the passive circuitry part doesn´t use high quality wiring than the signal is affected. IMHO

I'm not sure why you think the stock wires are "really bad". You're dealing with low level signal with very short wires. The reason you want instrument cables to be robust is because of the length. You not going to see a noticeable, if any, difference replacing the wiring. You're better off just making sure the wires aren't any longer than they need to be.

It cracks me up when you ask someone if anything was wrong with the original electronics/wiring and they say "no", but I want to switch it. You can't change their mind.

And there are a LOT of wires in those L-series basses...

There's nothing wrong with those wires, but if It keeps the OP amused...

I'll just buy popcorn and wait for the next thread "my bass does not work, please help me with the wiring" ;-)

thanks for your replies, but I´m not worried about so many wires in that cavity. I´ve done more complicated diagrams. Plus, my bro is an electronic addict and when he saw those wires he simply said bad wires. And we changed the stock wiring from series / parallel to single coils / parallel.

and yeah, comparing the stock wiring, it was bad wired from the factory when we contrasted it to the diagram.

Don´t worry it will work.

I also have a MIA `09 Jazz that I have it stock and won´t change anything on it. If it´s good from the factory than I don´t change it.

LOL

What was wrong in the original wiring?

Good luck to you.

PS: don't get me wrong, I am not one of those who insist you need to keep it original. In fact I am right now removing the guts of an L2000 and installing a Stingray style preamp in there.
But to simply replace the wires... I just don't understand what you hope to improve. The use of shielded wires will not change a thing, as the cavity is already shielded.
Also, you removed the "series" option for a single coil one? In my opinion you removed some great tones. If I change my switch, it would be to get a 3 position one, to add the single coil option *without* losing parallel or series. But that's just personal preference.

One thing I´ve learned that good wires improve the sound quality.

Plus bad soldering job and wires that with only one touch the joint soldering brake apart, plus the poor quality wires.....It all sums to me.

I do my sound tests on audio monitors and controled room so I can hear those diferences. On normal bass amps you won´t hear a thing.

Maybe that´s the freak guy in me that´s speaking....don´t know.

Man when I record with the Jazz I can hear those diferences in quality....I should have bought the MIA L2500...but coudn´t...

or maybe it´s just on my mind...could be....we´ll see after replacing all the wiring.

Oh, I don´t like series so I prefer single coils. It doesn´t sound as my Jazz but it´s helpfull to have it when I bring only one bass

I'd still like to know why you think the stock wires are bad. I guarantee most of what you are hearing is a placebo effect.

Maybe you´re right, but cables with lower capacitance will help frequency response and the shielding with the signal to noise ratio even more than the shielding paint. IMHO

the truth is I don´t lilke the type of wires used in this bass. It could be better by far and I think while it will be only a slight diference it will matter to me.

Keep them coming, I have till monday to make me change my mind lol.

Well, I don't get the feeling that you really understand electronics since you haven't been able to explain why you think the stock wires are bad. You seem to be dead set on replacing the wires, so best of luck to you.

I belive I did in the previous post,

I´m not dead set still...

Maybe you have a very good L2500 tribute, mine it seems not so good. I´m sorry I can´t explain this better to you.

But the wires for me are low quality. Maybe in terms of sound it will be minimal. Don´t get me wrong I could perfectly live with it but...hey if I can make it better, why not? It´s all reversable.

I may not be the guru of electronics but my brother knows much more than me and actually he told me to change the wiring. He´ll do it for me as he already changed the preamp chip to the burr brown equivalent and swaped out a condenser that was a buffer when switching between active/passive that was muffling the sound. The bass got much better with these mods, and to all these if you change the wires maybe it will get better still. Why not trying?
