Changing band name! How little is acceptable?

But that was the point, perhaps a little dark humour... something so innocent sounding can be something so nasty...

First I was going to say if both acts have been around the same amount of time, you should keep it, trademark it,and tell them to F off.

But then I heard the name and realized they are doing you a favor bullying you into changing it.

It's not just "not very good" as someone said, it's pretty bad. It doesn't matter WHAT it means, if it sounds dumb, it is dumb (in the minds of potential fans). Also, you would really have to play just the right kind of music for even your fans to dig it. I doubt you do, because I can't even imagine what that would be.

So I would cut your losses and come up with a new completely unrelated name. if you tell us what kind of music you do, I'm sure people will come up with a bunch of various suggestions, one of which might actually work.

Hmmm, yes. Although I still do think it is a good name, I think a new name is in order... however, I'll give it some time to think, I want it to be something personal that I like, rather than something suggested off the internet (no offence everyone! :) )

And I'm playing "sorta" metal, for lack of a better word, I tend to hang around the alternative/funk metal side, but I often dip into other genres... influences range from Mr Bungle to Xasthur, if I like it I play it. :P

a metal band from Cleveland, Keelhaul, was contacted not long after they became popular by a "pirate-metal" band from Boston of the same name, asking them to change their name. Cleveland Keelhaul checked if the name was trade marked. It was not. They trademarked it and told the Boston Keelhaul to F off.

Or, so the story goes :)

Different strokes, I guess...

Personally, I don't find it humorous. The dark humor is hidden in the "see more" roll out on a youtube video. That's a little too obscure for me, so I'm really just left with the name Doodlebug standing on its own. In that regard, it's just a name that strikes me wrong. But mine is only one opinion. If you like the name Doodlebug, what I think doesn't matter much. I also think it's likely that I probably won't much care for the next name you pick ;)

Band naming is tough stuff. My band, Tension, was named long before I came on the scene, but I don't care for it at all. I wouldn't mind at all if one of the many other bands called Tension made us change it. My second band is called Any The Wiser. We named it by consensus, but I was the one who came up with the idea. Some others aren't crazy about it. The meaning behind the name is a bit too cerebral.

I really like "The Argus Crow" and "Cherry Stone."
Interesting...

The Monty Python thing reminded me of the band "Toad the Wet Sprocket" - an NWOBHM band in Luton UK in the late 70s and early 80s. They had 'some' renown. I moved to Santa Barbara, California in the early 90s and played in the same circuit as "Toad the Wet Sprocket" - the chimey pop band who made mega-hits and best selling albums.
Two different continents, two different sounds, very different earnings.
Who keeps the name?

Yeah, but look at where the OP lives. His target audience is somewhat different from yours :)

(Aside: Survival Research Labs rebuilt a V1 engine to use as part of their shows. I was lucky enough to catch it a few years back. Man, that thing is LOUD at ground level 50' away. They don't get to play many shows because of the amount of explosions and dangerous stuff going on - if you ever get a chance, go see one)
