Ditto on the BTC. Works with any pickups, configurable treble freq, easy (and easily reversible) installation.

Better to stay passive than opt for a crappy preamp. You can't fix things later down the signal chain.

For $100 you should be able to find a decent set of passive pickups. What style of pickups does your bass have? MM-style humbuckers, jazz pickups, soapbars, P-style, ... ?

the BassMods preamp is a great little deal. I have one in a SX Jazz copy and it kicks!

basslines blackout 2band bass preamp. $59 at most internet stores. Very small circuit board on the stacked pot. So it fits pretty much any instrument as repalcement of the passiver tone control. Performance wise I like it better then many of the more expensive preamps. It also has selectable treble center freq via dipswitches on the circuit board.
