'Cheap = better?' Club

Maybe so, but IMO what happens more often here at TB is people who can't or won't spend more make false claims in order to make themselves feel better about the gear they settle for...

I never try to "justify" my gear choices - to be honest, I couldn't care less what others think of them... I play the best gear I can reasonably afford, since I make money playing, and like to play nice stuff... I take issue with the "My Squier/SX/Fury is just as good as any MIA Fender BS - in other words, don't pee down my back and tell me it's raining, and we'll get along just fine...

I have no reason to justify anything. I have owned allot basses all prices points and sold or traded them all to have what I own now. I'm always looking for a good deal and if it's a MIA Fender for the right price..goody but I'm not looking to replace my more budget basses with one since IMO it would not be money well spent or smart.

I also don't care what you or anyone thinks of what I play ... few if any do. Open your eyes up there are allot of basses out there that cost less than your MIA Fenders, are as good of quality and cost allot less....believe it...or not

I am new here and not sure of come of the abbreviations used here. I was able to figure many of them out but still don't know what SX and CV stand for.

CV= Squier classic vibe

SX is s brand:

Ah, I remember my earlier days of reading forums, beginning with live sound, then to various musical instruments, and I feel your pain.

They throw abbreviations and model numbers around, and I’m supposed to know what brand they’re talking about… very frustrating.

Funniest was on a sound forum, people would ask questions and often a response would be RTFM. I went through my whole sound vocabulary trying to figure out what that meant until finally I found out it meant “Read The F’in Manual”, haha.

:o

Honestly, I don't care what you play, and never said I did - and my eyes ARE open, and I'm still calling your "as good of quality" a line of BS... I've owned 'em all - be cheap if you want, but when you continue to put lipstick on a pig, you're going to get called on it...

Well, perhaps you could give me a few examples of sub-$500 bass guitars that will do everything every bass player wants or needs??

I dunno… say for anyone who wants/needs a passive Jazz, I think a $500 Fender Jazz can do whatever they need. No, not as well as a MIA, but it can “do” it, for anyone.

Hell, I’ve got an Affinity Jazz V that’s perfectly playable—tuned it and gigged it right out of the box, with no issues. It was ~$200, bought on line, and it was on par with my MIM Jazz V. If I put the same pickups, strings and setup to it as my MIM, I doubt I could tell the difference.

Edit: I linked to MF, all basses from $300-500, but it didn't reflect the sort, but if you check them out, there are some damn playable basses there.

Thanks,
Have you ever seen or played an SQ MIJ Squier? I have... own three and owned 4 MIA Fenders MIC,MIM as well as other lines basses from 1k-2k to 50 bucks. Sorry the SQ's beat them and any others MIA I put them up to..no lipstick here just facts. Cheap?..only the cost. I looove savin $$

My point is that 99.999% of bass players can convince themselves that they 'need' more instrument than they do. Show me - please, show me, what you can do on a boutique that you can't on a CV. I'd love to see it.

I could not or could any of us I believe if we were blindfolded in a crowd with a bands bassist playing a 50.00 bass or a $5000.00 bass...its in some TBer's heads. Some high dollar bass owners just need to try to justify it.

under $300 & it has exactly what I like because I threw it together:

IMO, the neck, fretobard, and fretwork are the kickers when it comes to cheaper instruments. I'm pretty sure I could pick out a Squier or MIM Fender by the neck, fret work, and quality of the fretboard unless it's an exceptional example or has had work done to it. Right off the wall though... They're pretty easy to pick out. Not saying they're bad. They're just not as good as the MIAs.

I'd say the same of G&L Tributes too... The MIA necks just feel better and the fretwork is usually better and more consistent.

With CNC machines doing most of the work (and cheap, but skilled/conscientious labor), this isn’t much of an issue these days. That’s what’s really narrowing the gap between the budget and high-end models.

There was a video, well, it was on a guitar forum I frequent, and blindfolded, they couldn’t tell the Custom Shops to the budget Squiers by any of the factors you mentioned.

Price has a direct correlation to time spent and attention to detail during the building process. When you go cheap you don't get the experience or the craftsmanship. Nothing wrong with mass produced goods, but the dead cow at Morton's isn't quite the same as the one at McDonald's.

Really a couple huh? I have been chasing the 2 I bought for years and my dealer friends have only had their hands on a couple in all the years they have been in biz. You're lucky to of played a couple  It's not just my facts there are plenty of others who agree. No lipstick here bud I proudly display all my Squiers to anyone...everywhere.
All I know is you say to have a few MIA Fenders since you have no profile filled out here. So enjoy them they are a common apple to find these days. I will continue to shake the trees for those good un's savin money along the way. ;)

Man, it sure would be nice if y’all could find common ground here. Both are putting up good arguments, and although I appreciate budget instruments that do the job, it’s hard for me to refute what georgestrings says. If one reads what he actually wrote, he’s about as reasonable can be, and he is coming from experience.

At least for the most part, like the VAST majority of the time (no, not all), price does reflect quality, and many times when someone argues to the contrary, the argument becomes somewhat subjective, imo.

I’m drinking some wine (I’ve got problems and need to, to sleep) so I might be in my natural “peace-maker” mode, but really, if ya really think about it, there’s not enough disagreement here to justify the intensity of your debate.

I know and respect you both… please peace out!

Its all good. I used to feel I had to spend allot of money on a bass to be happy. Since I love Fenders they had to be MIA and then vintage ones at that. Many times others would say around here their Squier or SX was just as good and I threw money away for a bass that they could duplicate for a hundred bucks or so...I saw red

Then I got a little education from others and a few guitar dealers I am friends with. When I saw the first SQ my dealer had I was floored. It was not cheap for a Squier but I had to have it. I since went on a quest to find more and other basses that I feel are as good as my past MIA vintage Fenders. I have done it IMO and it saves me money .... I lose nothing in return.

So why do I defend it? For the pure S&G of it all. Is that not why allot of us spend time here on TB? Its cool, I have no issues with him or what he plays you or anyone plays..I used to to be truthful but the debate is interesting on a boring night.

Here's my FrankenJazz. No BS,better than my two MIA's(Roadworn and Standard) that now live elsewhere. If it weren't,it would have been the one to go. It's comprised of..
MIA Fen. body/S1 plate/bridge
Fralin single coils
'84 MIJ Squier Jazz neck/tuners(rolled edges,flawless fretwork)
DSC00992.JPG
Quite versatile between the Fralins and the series/parallel switch. The well loved feel of a thirty year old neck with reknowned MIJ quality. 8.6lbs of dead-sexy Trans Sunset Orange. Assembled here for roughly 5bills...Nah,no regrets :smug:
