Cheap but good OD

Bad monkey would probably be ok. You might want to mod it when you get it. I've found (through playing around with my dad's bad monkey) that it lacks a fair amount of bass. I don't think that modding them is very difficult though and I know there are many different mods out there for em.

The Jet City Guitar Slinger Overdrive can be had for 80 or so brand new from your local GC. It's a Tubescreamer-esque circuit, but there's a bass boost switch. Doesn't loose low end and it's very mild. Similar to the Boss Blues Driver, but cheaper and it's true bypass and looks cool. I picked one up for 30 bucks at a shop around here that was going out of business, and it's one of my favorite ODs, and I own a Pork Loin.

Other than that, I've been eyeing the Behringer Vintage Tube Machine but haven't been able to try it. If you want something similar to a Sansamp BDDI without the Sansamp price, they also make the Behringer BDI21, which seemingly does the same thing. Tube emulation, you can get it to drive a bit, and it's only $40. I own Tech21 Sansamp Pedals, and they're excellent if you want a very high level of quality, but for someone with a limited income, Behringer is an option.

I know Behringer has a bad reputation, but they make some pretty alright stuff for not a lot of change. The main aversion seems to be the plastic casing, but I haven't managed to break one under normal circumstances. It's by no means phenomenal or the greatest thing money can buy, but it's cheap and can get the job done.

I don't think the Bad Monkey lacks bass, the bass control handles that. It's just too compressed and undynamic, and the character of the breakup is too saturated and creamy for my tastes, even at low levels of gain.

I like the Sparkle Drive a lot better. Much more dynamic, much more "tubey" in terms of being able to control break up with how hard you pluck. Yet both are TS clones.

Another TBer mentioned he got Keely to do his TS bass mod on his Sparkle Drive and he was very very happy with that. I know sfx does Bad Monkey mods, but I would start with a better TS clone than the Bad Monkey, personally. A used SD is not going to set you back that much.

I have been considering the Hardwire CM2 for a long time now, and will probably buy one. However, I saw a YouTube video today of the Joyo Ultimate Drive and was very impressed. After watching distortion and overdrive videos all day, I was a bit surprised by this one. Has any heard any clips of their Vintage Overdrive?
