cheap doesn't matter

Which GC was that? There are a couple near me and I'd love to avoid the droolers...

I own one. It is one of the best basses you can get for the money out there. Mine is heavily modified now but I loved it since I played it in the store. It has that Jazz growl you want from a Jazz bass obviously. I use Chromes by the way.

+1 on the Pure Blues. I use them on my Schecter P and love the sound!

I purchased a Squier 77 VIntage Modified. I LOVED the way it sounded in the shop. I went home and swapped out the pickups with a set of Aguilar 4J-HC and a John East Retro pre-amp.

I hated the changed sound.

I put the stock pickups in, but kept the John East Retro.

Definitely a solid bass!

If it already sounds good then why would you change the strings or the pickups? Strings and pickups are 90% of the sound.

Cheap absolutely does not mean bad. I have that one, my Univox lawsuit (avatar) keeps me from buying a fender p-bass, put together two '51 Warmoths I love, restoring two Peavey T-40s, just sold my Peavey grind with Bartolnis to a friend who is in pig heaven with it. Granted, I've tweaked all of them, but it's much more satisfying than spending much more money off the wall. Ok, I did just buy my third new instrument in 30 years a few months back (4003 from Wildwood, dealt with Bruce, great guy), but that's another story...

Manchester CT.
Now, I'm not Bashing GC, or sales, or drooolers.. This guy is my goto sales guy. Was just a very awkward moment is all. Did he notice the drool? if he did, he cldnt wipe it off himself.. If I wiped it, then he would notice it, if he hadn't already..



Anyway..I agree with OP, but I say it differently: "INEXPENSIVE does not ALWAYS mean cheaply/poorly made".

Manchester is my spot as well, there are four or five solid guys working there who won't steer you wrong, even if you have to occasionally put up with some spittle.

I played the same VM jazz the OP played, and I wasn't in love with it. The example I played had wicked fret buzz. I picked up an affinity J at a pawn shop that was much closer to being playable.

You hear it again and again, there are good Squiers out there, but you have to play a few because there are also some real dogs.

I heard that EMG came out with a set of Geezer Butlers for jazz basses now. I have the Pbass Geezer on my CV Pbass and it sounds great. Plus it will come with new pots and plug and play wiring. Took me about 40 minutes to change the one in my Squier, and that was with a wiring screwup so its simple enough for anyone to do. Just thought I would throw that out there as another pickup option for any Jazz guys who are considering a pickup change. Nice bass by the way! I've tried them and thought they were excellent as far as playability and sound.

I'm certainly diggin' the Cobalt Flats! They most certainly fit into that gulf between rounds and other flats. However, @reggie hall is looking for a bit more "growl", I'd recommend the Cobalt Rounds or even D'Addario FlexSteels.

If you haven't already, pull one of the original knobs off to see what kind of pot-shaft you're working with. If it's a knurled/split-shaft, you'll need a brass sleeve adapter to safely affix a knob that holds itself in place with a set-screw. ;)
