im looking for a clean warm thick yet versatile tube head for around 400ish bucks.

im debating maybe a 100 watt clean oriented head (originally made for guitar is ok) more watts would be good.

will be run through a classic ampeg 410 cab.

will be played everywhere from outdoor festival stages, small clubs, midsized clubs, theaters...

oh and i am also using the search function i have been researching. dont flame me!

Traynor Bass Tube heads are lower in price and have favorable reviews. I have both Fender and Ampeg Tube heads. Do your own homework and shop around in the used dept. Somebody here on this forum was selling a Fender Tube head for under $1000. Good luck . . :)

I just picked up a Peavey Alphabass for $200. For the price just a ridiculous amp.

Early returns are good, but I don't have but an afternoons worth of miles on it to give a good thorough review.

For $200 though, I wouldn't have found many deals much better for a comparable SS amp.

Simply put the words tube Head, and cheap don't go together.

There is a reason they cost more $$$$.

You have to pay for tube tone.

A 100 watt tube head will run in the $700-$1000 range.

More if you go custom made.

Look for a used Ampeg V4BH, or maybe a fender Bassman 100.
Or a Sunn 200s.

I use a windsor. You can find them used for around $200-250 depending on condition. They sound better on bass with some coupling cap increases in the preamp and at the PI, but are usable stock. Dude's right, you can't stay clean on them very easily... if you're looking for a clean head you should probably look elsewhere. Most guitar heads are going to be the same way- not very clean for very long.

Bugera 1960. It's the only respectable product they've made. 100 watt Marshall Super Lead clone, that is loud and stays clean to ridiculously high volumes. Plus it has that warm marshall tube tone. Can be had around $300 or so.

I had one of those for awhile, too - it was a nice rack mounted all-tube head with decent power, and a few nice features like an effects loop, tuner out, and plenty of EQ'ing ability...

I use two peavey windsor amps. Picked them up for less than $350 for both! I run a sans amp bddi into the effects return of one, and a rusty box into the effects return on the other. These are run into a sunn 215 and a sunn 610 respectively. It's a crap load to move but man does it sound good.

I agree with Mobina. The trick is to get your favorite preamp with plenty of bass, I have a GK 300. Run strait into my Windsor return. That sends your signal strait into the clean power tubes.
