Check out what fedex "dropped" off

This thread is scaring the Cr@% out of me. I have a bass due via FedEx next week.:(

Don't worry too much. For all the horror stories that get posted to TB, thousands of instruments reach their destinations in perfect condition every day. But when it comes down to it, always buy from reputable sellers on TB and elsewhere - they'll pack it well and help you make it right if something goes wrong.

IMO, you could probably ship a fender without a box or a case and it wouldn't break. ;)

Agreed! I have received a Fender P bass from FedEx where the shipper wrapped the case with tape, slapped the label on it, and shipped it to me! He says he dropped it off at the shipping store and this is how they sent it. Luckily the bass was fine after opening the case.

"Entirely repairable." I hope you're joking. That bass IS DONE....firewood, essentially. I really hope you/seller had insurance on the sale; it would be a shame to lose such a fine bass.

I respectfully disagree and have repaired such breaks in the past. It is definitely repairable. Now whether or not it was insured, which if it was, time for FedEx to pay, if that's the case.

That's insane!

And to think I just paid the UPS Store over $100 to pack and ship a Precision to CA.

You might clarify early on- preparing for the worst case scenario- What is the seller going to do if Fed Ex denies the claim due to insufficient/improper packing?
I have more experience with UPS, but there's a lot of fine print in those packing guidelines for them to find a way to screw you out of a damage claim.

.. i know for a fact that FedEX will not cover "one of a kind, limited edition or vintage instruments over 20 years old".. so, if you ship one of those with FedEX and it gets damaged, your screwed.. read the actual shipping agreement and the insurance rider you are purchasing..

+1. I recently bought a $4000 Ken Smith sixer for a friend overseas. I used FedEx to ship it to NY and I asked if the insurance will cover the whole value of the bass, they went and checked and they basically told me exactly what throbgod said, so it was fine in my case.

Maybe I missed it but was it the regular FedEx that delivered this bass of the OP, or was it FedEx ground?

I went back to Sam Ash to pick up a bass last weekend and they had sold the last one in the store so they had one shipped from another. The thing came wrapped in bubble wrap inside a guitar shaped box, which was stuffed in a bigger rectangular box and packed with the giant bubbles.
They took no chances.
That's how everything should be packed.

I was at my luthier this weekend and some guy brought in a guitar... same thing... fed ex or ups dropped off his new guitar broken in the same place.
He mentioned a few tips to prevent this (sorry OP, too late to help you) 1) d-tune the guitar (take off the tension) 2) put it in the case inside of a box and 3) pay the few extra bucks for insurance! ... order of importance 3), 1), 2).
From the looks of it you should have no problem repairing it... but still sucks!

Very similar story. I shipped an Olympia AGB, the import version of the Thunderchief, to a TB buyer two years ago via FedEx. In a very sturdy case and well-packed. They semi-wrecked it. I believe he was able to salvage some parts, but the body was trashed.

To be honest, I get scared every time I see these threads (especially with a bass on the way as of today and the possibility of purchasing another one soon) but I just need to remind myself that it's the "black swan." It's the statistical anomaly and I'll probably be okay... even if they leave signature required items on my porch when I'm not home.

Wow. They must have just brutalized that thing, then. I'm guessing it either fell from a height, or more likely, something heavy fell on it.
Not necessarily. That sort of thing can happen when the box simply falls flat, forward or backward from it's standing position and if the headstock had not been 'trussed' or wrapped in bubble wrap to prevent movement the force on that area can be devastating and could very well look like this. The body and neck stop and are held in place but the headstock whips down centrifugally causing this type of damage. The box would look completely undamaged at the same time because it's a flat fall and make full contact with the floor which makes a potentially difficult claim.

Certainly could be something but this is a possibility that I have heard about in the past. Good luck with the claim and FedEx will hopefully be cooperative. I never had one with them. Had one very bad on with USPS and one very positive one with UPS but I ship all my guitars with FedEd. I do believe a little more care needs to be paid attention to in the shipping prep though and if teh seller did not take those steps then some of the responsibility lies with them as well.
