Check out what fedex "dropped" off

I had a Gibson acoustic headstock break like that - not from getting banged, but from extreme heat in the back of my car. My guitar broke at what was apparently an old repair - the glue just failed in the heat. In the pic of your bass, it almost looks like the back of the neck/headstock broke at a glued joint - and at least in my part of the country the weather has been over 100º most days. I had mine repaired and it's as good as new (well, for a really old guitar).

FedEx is horrible. When at work I have watched the driver throw Mac boxes of the truck onto the dock. I watched him throw a 12,000 dollar piece of equipment I was waiting for one day, so I called corporate. A couple of hours later I get a call from the local hub manager. He actually attempted to lecture me because I should have called him instead of corporate. Lets just say we had it out on the phone. For a week or so there was a different drive showing up at work, then back to the same guy. Yesterday saw him toss 2,000 dollar mac onto the concrete dock. went inside and called corporate, still waiting to hear back.

Don't think this is an issue btwn Fedex and UPS. Both screw up from time to time, and a lot depends on who just happens to be handling the packages. For years I hated Fedex and loved UPS. Then they both changed delivery guys and guess what. I'm sure that happens all the way down the line from the person 1st taking the package, to the sorters, packers, drivers, etc. I think it's kinda silly debating which company is better.

As for the bass itself, my red flag popped up as soon as you said they told you "of course" they detuned the strings. I've had countless basses shipped to me, and have shipped many basses myself. I never had a single one of them detuned, never expected them to be detuned, never thought about detuning them, and actually would think that would be more harmful than helpful in the shipping process. Their response of "of course we did" seems like them wanting to cover their butts bigtime.

I've only had one bass delivered that was damaged and the company sending it took care of it, no problem. A piece of the body looked like it was hacked away. I believe the vibrations from the truckride alone could do all kinds of things if theres a slight flaw in the instrument. I don't entirely trust that the person selling it to you didn't pack it as such. It very well could have happened some time btwn picture time and delivery and they just said screw it, we'll send it blame delivery. But it doesn't even really matter. What matters is that you get your money back, and there is NO FREAKING WAY I'd accept their store credit BS. You wanted THAT BASS which came to you busted through no fault of your own. I say they either replace the bass or give you your money. Store credit is BS.

Didn't realize how passionate I was about this whole thing till I started typing. :) Waiting for the outcome. I've a feeling it will be fine.

the more i look at it the more i think they didn't detune the strings because of the way its broken forward..like it was dropped hard and caused some failure in the wood and the strings help yank it forward..i dunno..

Not sure that's going to matter in the long run, it's between the dealer and the shipper at this point. The main thing would be to make sure they can't point the finger at you.

i have a time stamp of when it was delivered
and about 3 minutes later where i sent them a message on ebay then the forums..

they contacted me again asking me for my phone #(don't know why they didn't ask that yesterday) for the fedex claim..so hopefully it will all work out...they have perfect feedback on ebay with 2000+ transactions, so hopefully they won't screw me over.

So I guess if you guys received a bass like that you'd just smile and say, "Hey, I can fix that!" and then go buy some glue.

Not at all. I have plenty of glue so I don't need to go buy any.

I'm sure that just about everyone who mentioned that the bass can be fixed did so merely to comfort shaggy and offer up some hope if he were to get handed the dirty end of the poop stick. Surely it goes without saying that we'd all want our money back or get a replacement if this happened to us... that kinda goes without saying, wouldn't you think?

judging the pic where the nut has shifted, IMO, it appears that the bass was shipped with tension (which IMO, is the correct way to ship it). IME, the strings being under tension and then suddenly letting go when it broke would shift the nut laterally.

but if you look at the bass's headstock design, with a mahogany neck and the small amount of wood in the contact area for strength, i wouldn't be surprised at all if alot of that model had broken headstock issues, or will in the future. Ovation acoustics used to break in their hardshell cases very often, until they redesigned the trussrod system, since with the adjuster behind the nut, too much wood was removed in a crucial area, right at the headstock's 'break' angle.

That is a very good sign.

I'm betting they will make this right one way or the other, and though it can be fixed, I highly doubt this seller would ever expect you to accept and be satisfied with a headstock repair.

If they can't hunt down an identical model to put in its place, you're in for a full refund from someone (seller or shipper).

Be patient and prompt with all information needed to propel the claim through the system.

Hold out for a new bass.
I had an issue with a one year old acous/elec. The wooden bridge partially lifted putting stress on the belly area and left several fine stress cracks. They fixed the bridge but I still had some cracks. I stressed the resale value.
They took it back and rebuilt it.

Did you pay by credit card? You could tell your card you've got a dispute and not to charge you until it's resolved. You paid for an instrument and they sent you firewood. If FedEx denies the claim you're screwed. If you cancel payment on the card it will give you leverage until the dispute is resolved.

I would not do that unless it's a last resort... All you're going to do by doing stuff like that right off the bat, is insult the seller and start a war. I own a biz, and if somebody instantly did a charge-back on me and didn't even give me a chance to make it right, I would not be happy.
