I couldn't find cost per unit, but it's probably worth it on the $1k + gear.
I notice they sell warning tape for the outside to let handlers know there's a shock sensor inside. Maybe skip buying the sensor and just buy the warning tape!
 
I don't know how Fedex does it, but I've been in the back of the local UPS terminal. Imagine this: A guy standing by a huge pile of boxes outside the back end of a semitrailer. He's pitching all those boxs into the trailer up to the front end of it. Now imagine your bass being pitched like that.


Anytime you ship anything with a common carrier, you should pack it, or have it packed like this guy is going to be handling it.

Because he is.
