If I ever get up that way I do want to check CME out.
Other shops (bass and/or otherwise) that are like that, that I have been to and have purchased from are Bass Central, Gryphon Stringed Instruments, and Schoenberg Guitars.

They're one of my favorites to visit for sure. It's like an Old Navy and a vintage guitar shop had a baby. Helpful, attentive staff and accessible vintage gear within reach, and you can try it all.

Everything about the store is great, except I was quite disappointed with the bass setups. Even on the $3k+ models.
CME has great customer service, too! I ordered a new* '17 MIM Precision w/case from them. Upon receiving it, I noticed a couple of surface scratches on it.
They gave me a discount on top of an already great price... and a free tee! Yes, it's a good thing they aren't closer!
Not sure what the building is in the reflection, but the architecture of it is pretty cool!

Last time I was in Chicago was towards the end of the pandemic and they weren't open for business. Tried dealing with them online but they didn't answer my emails when it came to followup on availability. Just seemed they weren't interested. Glad to hear they are back to good practices. They sure missed on a few thousand dollars of my money.
I may not have left empty handed if they had more 5 string basses on display…
I got a good deal on a Sire natural swamp ash P7 from them. Ordered thru a sales representative. No issues whatsoever.
I had a great experience buying a Series 1 Alembic (used) from them. The people working in the bass area are bass players.

Oh yeah I forgot, about a year ago, I was browsing their inventory online,
and never intentionally connected with them in any way AFAIK,
then a few weeks later, I got an email from them saying something like "we caught you looking..."
Kinda freaked me out
Do you also have a reverb account and were you logged in on the same device when you visited CME? They are the same company, so your email info was already known to CME. Change your cookie preferences might prevent this or NOT.
Great freakin music store !........Have a blank credit card when you walk in the door......hard to walk out empty handed .

If you happen to go in there on a Saturday afternoon (if you can find somewhere to park),
there'll be like a zoo of people in there.
About one third of them will be snapping pictures, and another third walking around in a daze.
Pictures can be deceiving
I stopped in a couple years ago because I was in town and called a day later to buy the Sandberg I tried the day earlier. Awesome facility and staff.
And I'm only 4 hours and and 20 minutes away. Somehow I feel my my relationship with my wife may take a turn for the worse if I made the trip. Maybe, if I shipped her off to visit her friend in Florida for a few days...
Little known fact, the owner of CME is the founding father of Reverb,
but he sold it to Etsy a few years ago for zillions.
