In random searching I found that Chicago Music Exchange has some of the best high-res photos of basses available online, which I've used to "trace some designs in Autocad for my own use building basses for myself. I've bought around $300 of various merchandise from them over time, so I don't feel too guilty. Good company, great website, I'd love to visit one of their stores if I'm ever in Chiago....

I may have accidentally bought a custom shop bass and a compressor pedal when I was visiting my sister in Chicago last year. Thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Guitar Resurrection in Austin used to keep Alembics in stock for years before they sold. Even before the current era where having a lot of high end floor inventory in brick and mortar stores became economically impossible I wondered how they could afford to do that.
I bought two Sandbergs from here online. I like that bass wall - the opposite of GC 
The last time I was there I played a 1962 precision bass! They always have a nice selection of basses.
I wish we had something like that here. We used to have a bass only store that had nice instruments, but it didn't last. They built a guitar store and bass store directly beside each other.
They basically doubled their overhead for no reason.
All we really have is GC which is better than nothing but hearing yourself play in there can be annoying. The acoustic guys have their own room but anything amplified happens in the main room.
Dont even get me started on fx. They won't even order bass fx for stock.

I made a pilgrimage there a couple years ago. My wife was very impressed with the bathrooms.

Bought twice from them in the early 2000s. I bought a 61P bass from them. Went to sell it a few years later and found out it was routed under the pickguard. Also purchased a 4005 that I wanted badly at the time and they bumped up the price because they claimed someone told them they we selling it too cheap. I guess you could say both situations were my fault, but imo not great business practices.
My local GC usually had around 20 basses in stock max, and just the Usual Suspects. Maybe 4 or 5 amps on a good day, Mark Bass, a couple Rumbles and whatever rando used amps happen to appear, that's it. They don't even bother to try to sell you a bass, so at least they leave you alone. Wish we had something better…..

If you happen to go in there on a Saturday afternoon (if you can find somewhere to park),
there'll be like a zoo of people in there.
About one third of them will be snapping pictures, and another third walking around in a daze.

That was my experience. The staff was doing their best to be helpful but they were just outnumbered. They had an incredible Sandberg VM4 with aged orange finish and block inlays that I kick myself once a month or so for not getting.
I've been in there several times.
