chick vs chick with bass: electric boogaloo

It was the right bass at the right time for me. I'm not really a brand wh0re when it comes to instruments (yet), but who knows how that will end up. I've tried quite a few Ibby's and the ones I've tried so far just don't feel right up against me. Emotionally based opinion, I know, but with basses, I have to love'em to take'em home.

This one was lust at first picture, white hot fire in the gut, and love at first touch. It only got better when I was able to talk the seller down from $250 to $100 because of the cleanup I was going to have to do. But she has 24 very playable frets and action that makes my fingers want to never stop touching.

I have so many others on my wish list to touch and feel and hear right now that it'll be ages before I get to experience them all. But that, m'dear, is a totally different topic.


EDIT: I just realized that this post could just almost qualify for bass porn. Thor, help me out here, please? Do we have a rule against that?

Greatness is an understatement. My line is spectacular. My ability to prevent turning impure thoughts into something tangible needs work, however. So I have to be careful with this lest I act on some of those thoughts.

Most important question: how essential is it to play the exact bass line? I've subbed here and there and for orignal songs if you get the jist of it I would just groove the rest. Know where the changes are and stay with them but my vote goes for personalizing the line if its easier than just figuring it out. Also, if its essential to play the exact line, listen to that song day and night until its in Your head and then trial and error it til it pans out.

I had to learn 2 Iron Maiden songs, a Judas Priest cover, as well as 6 or so originals in 2 weeks to sub for a friends band, every free minute should be spent with that bass. Work eat, bass, sleep.

On the covers I might have some slack, but getting it right is a big deal to me. I'm making good progress with those, though. On the original, the primary songwriter told me to own it and make it my own. Unfortunately, I'm still way too new to feel comfortable in what I'm laying down there.

Some of these have such iconic bass lines that messing them up would really be a bad thing to do. Here's what we've got on the list in no particular order:

Lawyers, Guns & Money - Warren Zevon
Hotel California - The Eagles
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
World I Know - Collective Soul
Losing My Religion - REM
Love Her Madly - The Doors
Gimme Shelter - Playing For Change arrangement (way less busy than the Stones arrangement, but a far different groove)
Use Somebody - Kings of Leon

Bolded my favorite songs on that list xD Floyd, Stones, and Procol Harum being tops.

Tackle the covers one at a time. Then as they come start playing them back to back until you can get through the set. However don't burn yourself out. Stay cool and collected, it's a shame but true that bassists can get away with a flub here and there as long as you recover and don't make the "oh damn I screwed up" face.

I've been trying to get back to this post, but I keep coming across other ones I want to reply too. (no names or anything PD :smug:)
Same basic question worded a little different....Do you need the guitar chords so you can write a bass line or do you need the bass line picked out?
