choosing a wireless transmitter for IEM

Hi all,
I am using a wired IEM system (Mackie 240's + behringer PM-1) but I want to switch to wireless. I tried with a cheap transmitter (from gear4music), but the signal had some serious dropouts during gigs, and while playing bass, a lot of hiss was added to the signal, so threw it away.
I am now looking at the Sennheiser XSW IEW A or B (not E because that is used a lot in Holland for cellphones, tablets etc).
What are you using for IEM systems and how often should I expect signal drop-outs?
In an ideal world there would be none, but perhaps I am not having realistic expectations?

You’ll be using this in Holland? I can’t speak for that side of the world. I’m in the US. I use the Audio Technica ATW-3255 with zero issues. It has a built in frequency analyzer and I can scan the entire frequency band here (470-680 MHz). Highly recommend for use here but I’m not versed in what’s available in Europe.
 
Ok so a few things to consider. If you want long term reliability I would recommend staying away from the offerings transmitting on the 2.4 and 5 Ghz (WiFi/cell phone) bands. They work but overtime they will become more crowded.

You can’t go wrong with Shure, Sennheiser and Audio Technica. All solid performers with great features. That being said, IMHO for $850 USD the Audio Technica ATW-3255 is a no brainer. 138 frequency range vs 24 to 40 frequency range offered by Shure and Sennheiser. Comes with rack mount kit, built in frequency analyzer, limiter, networkable, can run 2 separate mono mixes from 1 transmitter, XLR and TRS connections, the list goes on and on.

I use a Shure PSM 300 series. Before, I tried a cheaper one for a while, but experienced drop outs sometimes, plus some interference that resulted in noise.

With the Shure, there are occasional dead spots on stage. Those are very small and only cause a drop out if you stand in the exact position - as soon as you move a few cm in any direction it's good again. It's nothing to worry about and works great. I think the Sennheiser will be reliable, too.

Yes, I'll be using it in Holland. I think the band below the 800MHz is recommended here too
I'd check on what's LEGAL in Holland. I'd bet they have specific frequencies set aside (allocated) for private use.. most countries do.
If you check what Thomann's website, they can probably tell you what's legal there.
No matter, Shure, Sennheiser, Mipro, Audio-Technica and reliable vendors.

The last band that the FCC outlawed here in the US was the 600Mhz. If there's any that haven't been trashed you might be able to pick something in that range here very cheap if it's still legal in your country. Shure, Sennheiser, Audio Technica.. all good brands, but I had a set of Carvins that were great. I think I sold 2 stereo transmitters and 3 belt packs separately for parts for about $250 when I could no longer use them legally. Technically though, it's illegal to sell, or advertise to sell anything in the banned band now. Selling to outside the US may be ok.

Is your bass also going wireless? If you’re still using a cable for your bass, I recommend making or buying a combined iem/instrument cable. Then put your P1 pack wherever you plug in your bass ie. pedal board or amp. Ernie Ball makes one of these cables now. Though pricey, it’s cheaper than a good wireless unit which will probably still get occasional drop outs. I mount my wired iem belt pack (behringer P2) to my pedal board, or set next to amp when I’m not using my pedal board, then use the combined cable. (I’ve made my own with a cable sheath and bought the Ernie Ball, both work well) It feels like I’m just using a normal instrument cable, nothing extra.

If you’re bass is wireless then it makes sense to research and invest in a good wireless IEM setup. If your bass is wired, it makes more sense TO ME to get something like the Ernie Ball combo cable.

Are those "illegal" frequencies really a thing?
I have used an "illegal" Sennheiser system for many years without any issue.
And I've never seen the police rushing into someone's home for such a reason.

Absolutely if you're a pro rental company it's another subject.
 
I've tried various Shure and Sennheiser sets, but they were all too noisy or squishy for my taste since I was used to wired IEMs. Then I found the Xvive U4, very clear sound, no dropouts, no hissing, no fumbling with batteries or flimsy power supplies. Couldn't be happier with it. Only downside is that it's mono, but the chances I get to use stereo monitoring on stage are far and few between.

Couldn't be happier with it. Only downside is that it's mono, but the chances I get to use stereo monitoring on stage are far and few between.

Interesting. Sadly, stereo is a must for me. I haven't had any fidelity issues with the Sennheiser G4 and the range is surprisingly good.

If you had "squishy/noisy" feeds with the Senn/Shure models, I'd guess something was wrong in the setup, or you were getting interference somewhere, or using the wrong "band" for your location.

When you're used to the squeaky clean, noise free operation of wired in ears fed by a headphone amp, the noise floor of those traditional UHF units is super annoying. I've never owned them, but was provided a set by the sound techs on various occasions. I've got no clue how they were setup, but I've definitely played the G3, G4 and PSM300 on several occasions. The PSM300 seemed unable to handle any signal without compression, even if it was just vocals. That might have been a gain staging/setup issue, but the tech at that gig couldn't get it out. The Sennheisers were particularly noisy on various occasions. The last time I got to use a G4 set it was so annoying I switched back to wired IEMs halfway through soundcheck.

In my experience those UHF units are in most cases inferior to a decent digital (2.4 or 5GHz) set. A big touring band has a dedicated wireless tech who makes sure all frequencies are properly set and who uses those flagpole antenna's to amplify the signal. But for most consumer/prosumer users I'd say the digital systems are way more solid due to it being digital.

The UHF system is like your FM radio, if another station is broadcasting on a different frequency that is close to the one your listening to, it might still cause interference. That's because the radio waves are "open", interference or other signals can creep in without knowing the source or the fidelity.

The digital systems are more closed off in that sense. As long as there is a strong enough connection between transmitter and receiver, there is not much that gets in the way of it. Only if you have the same set as someone else on stage and you set it to the same frequency, you will pick up what the other is transmitting. But even then it will only pick up 1 transmitter because they are digitally synced.

All the talk about the congestion on the 2.4Ghz band in this context is, in my opinion, nonsense. Simply because as stated above there is a digital handshake between devices so as long as my transmitter and receiver are within reach of each other it works flawlessly. And it even sounds better, which is fundamentally due to the 2.4ghz frequency allowing way faster transmission than the lower UHF frequencies thus allows for higher bit rates etc. (The same applies to 2.4Ghz Vs 5Ghz, which is why 5Ghz is the faster WiFi option in your home network).

I have never had to search for a free frequency and never had dropouts on 2.4Ghz, while with UHF systems I have never ever experienced noiseless operation. UHF is basically old tech. Just like in the petrol to EV transition, UHF still has its place in professional applications where extra long range is needed, but most consumers are better off with a 2.4 GHz set (or EV for that matter).
 
I agree with sOc9 completely. I've been using Sennheisers for decades and never had a problem with noise that interfered with the ability to provide a good representation of the music. A wired connection will always be best, but this works well. I can only think that you've had issues with operator error on the part of the people providing the mixes. No matter what system you use, it's important to own it yourself and understand how to operate it and optimize the sound quality. Frequency scanning is key. I've never, ever had issues with adjacent frequencies interfering, but it's trivial to ensure that it doesn't happen.

Mayo, I understand the theories you invoke, but in the real world UHF still is reliable and the noise floor is quite reasonable. The G4 published signal to noise is 90db. Even if we take that with a grain of salt, anything over 50db would be sufficient unless you are playing very delicate acoustic music in quiet venues. I don't discount your experiences, but I think that there are things going on that make them atypical.

Yes there may have been user error involved. Like I said the systems where not mine but supposedly the folks who provided and operated it were "professionals". Even so, why the need for frequency scanning at every venue? Seems like an outdated notion to me.

I know of various musicians in my area who have similar experiences. In a local rehearsal studio our guitar player and singer can not get their PSM300 set to operate without noise and hiss, even after scanning for frequencies a dozen times. The guitarist is fine with it because he believes it's part of wireless IEMs and you can't use it without some noise. The singer is very annoyed by it because it's distracting to him. In the meantime my Xvive system is performing dead quiet in the same room.

I too was sceptical of the digital stuff before I bought the Xvive. It's cheap and the big boys still use UHF so there must be something inferior about it, right? Bought it in a pinch, needed something affordable fast. So I was very surprised with the sound quality and hassle free operation.

All I'm trying to say is: if you're a weekend warrior like most of us, don't discount the digital solutions just because your WiFi at home is spotty. Yes they are both labeled 2.4Ghz, but that's only a monniker for a very broad range of frequencies. It might save you a bunch of cash too, which you can put towards good earbuds. Or keeping the significant other happy with a nice dinner to smooth over the excessive gear purchases. ;)
 
Just be clear, I don't discount the digital options at all.

I'm curious, what kind of earbuds do you use? If they are super sensitive, they might be presenting the noise above what less sensitive buds would. I had that problem with some Future Sonics about 15 years ago.
